archaeological excavation
In cooperation with the construction of "Southern Dynasty stone carving site park and Museum" in Nanjing, Nanjing Museum is carrying out archaeological excavation in the area of Yongning Mausoleum of emperor Chen Wendi in shizichong, Qixia District. In March 2013, two large tombs of the Southern Dynasty were excavated on the north side of Yongning mausoleum stone carvings. However, because the seal of the tomb had just been removed, the tomb chamber had not been opened, and the identity of the owner of the tomb was still uncertain. However, experts speculate that the owner of the tomb was closely related to Emperor Chen Qian of the Southern Dynasty, and it was probably emperor Chen himself.
In order to protect the Southern Dynasty stone carvings with Nanjing characteristics, "Nanjing Southern Dynasty stone carvings site park and Museum", as one of the 20 major cultural projects in Nanjing in 2013, is located in the shizichong area. It is for this reason that the archaeological Department came here to carry out the preliminary archaeological exploration work, and on this basis to prepare the protection plan and construction scheme.
In fact, as early as June 2012, archaeologists began to carry out comprehensive archaeological exploration in shizichong area. After more than half a year of "carpet search" with an area of more than 20000 square meters, archaeologists finally found two large-scale tombs of the Southern Dynasty at the southern foot of BEIXIANG mountain and about 350 meters to the north of Yongning mausoleum. The two tombs are not far apart, and the scale is roughly the same. The length of the pit is 16 meters, and the width is about 6.5 meters. Archaeologists at the scene said that the two tombs had just been uncovered, and no further excavation had been carried out on the tombs themselves. Therefore, no important cultural relics have been unearthed, and the identity of the owner of the tombs is still uncertain. But it has been confirmed that it was in the Southern Dynasty.
