Xi'an Foreign Studies University (hereinafter referred to as "Xiwai" or "waiyuan") is located in Xi'an, the thirteen Dynasties ancient capital of the world's famous historical city. It is one of the first four foreign language colleges established in New China, and the only university with a complete range of major foreign languages in Northwest China. It is a high-level university to be built during the 12th Five Year Plan period. It has 27 secondary colleges, departments and departments, as well as academic research institutions such as Shaanxi Tourism Research Institute, foreign language and Literature Research Institute, Foreign Language Education Research Institute and Human Geography Research Institute.

Historical evolution

The period of the Russian Academy in Northwest China

In 1950, in order to meet the needs of national economic construction and political diplomacy, the Ministry of Education decided to establish a foreign language college in Northwest China.

On November 7, 1952, the Russian Department of Northwest University, the Russian Department of Lanzhou University and the Russian class of the Party School of the Northwest Bureau of the Communist Party of China merged into the "Northwest Russian college", which is the predecessor of Xi'an Foreign Studies University.

 

 

The period of Xi'an Foreign Language Institute

In 1958, the Ministry of Education approved the university to change its name to "Xi'an Foreign Languages University" and began to recruit undergraduates. In the same year, English major was added.

In 1959, the school added German and French majors.

In 1960, the Spanish major was added and later merged with the French major to form the French Spanish Department.

In 1966, when the Cultural Revolution began, the normal teaching order of schools was destroyed.

In 1969, the school was forced to move to Fuxian County, Northern Shaanxi Province to set up "cave University" and "May 7th cadre school". Teachers and students of all majors engaged in physical labor and teaching at the same time.

In 1972, the main body of the school moved back to Xi'an, and the teaching order began to recover.

In 1975, the school set up a Japanese major in the Russian Department and changed its name to "Russian Japanese department".

In 1979, the school began to recruit graduate students.

In 1985, the school opened the Department of tourism.

In 1986, it was approved to become an authorized unit for master's degree.

In 1995, Xi'an Foreign Language College and Shaanxi foreign language teachers college merged to form a new Xi'an Foreign Language College.

In 2001, the school established a business school.

In 2002, the school held a celebration meeting to celebrate its 50th anniversary, and built the "triumphal arch" gate of Yanta campus. The English Department was renamed "English College".

In 2003, the school established the film and Television Media College of Xi'an Foreign Languages College.

In 2004, the school added Korean major. In the same year, this major merged with Japanese major to establish "Oriental Language and Culture College".

In 2005, the Oriental Language and Culture College added Arabic major.

 

 

Xi'an Foreign Studies University

In 2006, the University changed its name to Xi'an Foreign Studies University, the fourth Foreign Studies University in China.

In 2006, the major of Hindi and Portuguese were added to the East language college and the Department of French and Spanish respectively.

In 2007, the Department of French, Spanish and Portuguese merged the Italian major to establish the College of western language and culture; the College of culture and communication was adjusted into the College of international relations, the College of Journalism and communication and the College of Chinese language and literature; in the same year, the school established the International College.

In 2007, the school of Oriental Language and culture added the major of Hindi.

In 2008, the Oriental Language and Culture College added Thai major.

In 2010, the school of Arts was established by integrating the original Xiying film and television media college.

 

In January 2013, it was approved to become a doctoral degree awarding unit, and was granted the right to confer a doctoral degree in the first level discipline of foreign language and literature.

 

In September 2014, the university approved the establishment of foreign language and literature postdoctoral research mobile station.

 

In May 2017, Xi'an Foreign Studies University, Northwest University, Shaanxi Normal University, Northwest University of political science and law, and Xi'an University of Posts and Telecommunications jointly established the "Chang'an alliance" of Shaanxi universities.

 

On September 29, it initiated the establishment of the Sino Japanese University Alliance for people to people exchanges.
