School background

In the early 1920s, there was a serious decline in the development of normal education in China. In the past, normal universities in Nanjing, Guangzhou, Wuhan, Chengdu, Shenyang and other places have been transformed into or merged into ordinary universities one after another. The only national Beiping Normal University (now Beijing Normal University), which trains secondary education teachers in China, was in danger of being cancelled at that time.

In 1931, the delegation of the League of nations came to China to investigate and put forward: "there are too many universities in China's cultural center, so we should reduce them to avoid waste. In European countries, the training of secondary school teachers is basically the same as that of university education. This kind of task should be undertaken by the College of Arts and the College of Science in the University. "

In July 1932, the Kuomintang government ordered the national Peiping Normal University to stop enrolling students in order to suppress the tide of learning. In October of the same year, the Ministry of education of the Republic of China announced the trend and measures for reforming China's education, which once again proposed that "universities should focus on agriculture, industry and medicine, and the current teacher education should be abolished."

On November 27, 1932, independent review No. 28 published an article entitled "normal education in the sound of educational reform" signed by Shu Yong, claiming that the abolition of Normal University "is just the continuation of historical evolution and the end of educational system reform". In December, the organization committee of the Central Committee of the KMT put forward the "reform of higher education plan" to the Third Plenary Session of the fourth Central Committee of the KMT, accusing Peking Normal University of "having no different departments from ordinary universities, no special system overlapping, and only wasting funds, and the students they have created are difficult to meet the requirements of middle school teachers.". Therefore, it advocates that "the national Peiping normal university should be closed immediately.".

Under such a background, at the beginning of its establishment, the normal college of Yiqin university has made clear the school running purpose of "researching educational scholarship, cultivating secondary school teachers and improving general education".

On September 20, 1933, at the opening ceremony of the normal college of Yiqin University, Lin Liru said: "the former Japanese municipal normal college is designed to train primary school teachers for Guangzhou City, and the establishment of the normal college is also to train middle school teachers for Guangdong Province. This is based on the original mission, plus a new mission. The two missions will be carried out by our college forever."

The evolution of University

In 1933, Mr. Lin Liru, a famous contemporary educator, founded the predecessor of South China Normal University, the normal college of Guangdong Provincial Yiqin University, and served as the president.

In March 1935, the Ministry of education of the Republic of China, on the ground that the normal college of Leqin University was "inconsistent with the law" (the name of normal college did not exist in the organizational law of the University promulgated by the national government at that time), and that the name and content of the three departments of literature, history, geography, mathematics and chemistry of Leqin university normal college were not very consistent with each other, changed the name of the normal college of Leqin University into the Education College of Leqin University and set up a new teaching college Department of education.

In July 1937, the comprehensive anti Japanese war broke out. In order to facilitate management, the Guangdong provincial government has ordered the reorganization of the school of education of gaqin University: first, the school of engineering will be merged into National Sun Yat sen University; second, the business school will be changed into gaqin Business School of Guangdong Province (now Guangdong University of Finance and Economics); third, the school of education will be changed into Guangdong Provincial School of education, with Lin Liru as its president.

In September 1938, the school of education of Yiqin University developed into Guangdong Provincial College of education.

In August 1939, at the order of the provincial government, the Guangdong Provincial Institute of education moved back to Ruyuan, northern Guangdong, and was officially renamed the Guangdong Provincial College of Arts and Sciences,

In October 1950, Guangdong Provincial College of Arts and Sciences was renamed Guangdong College of Arts and Sciences.

In October 1951, with the approval of the Ministry of education of the Central South military and political Commission, the normal college of National Sun Yat sen University and the Department of education of private South China United University were merged into Guangdong College of Arts and Sciences to establish South China Normal College.

In 1952, the Russian Department of Nanfang University, the Education Department of private Lingnan University, national Hainan Normal University, the Education Department of national Guangxi University, the geography specialty of history and Geography Department of Hunan University, the geography specialty of normal Department of national Nanchang University and Hainan Normal College were merged.

In November 1970, South China Normal University was renamed Guangdong Normal University.

In November 1977, Guangdong Normal University resumed its original name of South China Normal University.

In 1978, the University was identified as a key university of Guangdong Province.

In October 1982, South China Normal University was renamed South China Normal University.

In 1996, the school was selected into the national "211 Project".

In 1999, it was selected into the first batch of national college students' cultural quality education bases.

In 2000, the University was awarded the national advanced unit of graduate employment.

In 2004, Hu Jintao, former general secretary of the CPC Central Committee and President of the people's Republic of China, attended the celebration of the fifth anniversary of Macao's return to China, calling it one of several famous normal universities in China.

In 2005, the University passed the undergraduate teaching evaluation of the Ministry of education and was rated as excellent.

In 2006, the school passed the overall acceptance of the "Tenth Five Year Plan" and "211 Project".

In 2011, it was rated as "National Graduate Employment typical experience university" by the Ministry of education.

In 2015, Guangdong Province and the Ministry of Education jointly built South China Normal University.

In 2017, it was selected as one of the first batch of national demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, and is the only university selected from the national "211 Project" key normal universities.

On May 23, 2017, South China Normal University signed the framework agreement on the joint training of master of education with Hanshan Normal University, Lingnan Normal University and Shaoguan University from the East, West and north of Guangdong Province to carry out the joint training of master of education, so as to provide more high-level education talents for the underdeveloped areas such as the East, West and north of Guangdong Province.

In September 2017, it was selected as a national "double first-class" world-class discipline construction university.

In March 2018, the Graduate School of South China Normal University was officially unveiled.

On July 12, 2018, the Ministry of teacher education of South China Normal University was officially inaugurated. In addition, the Teacher Education College of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Dawan district was also inaugurated.

In November 2018, the International Union College of South China Normal University was established.

In November 2018, it was selected as "key construction universities of high level universities" in the new round of high level university construction plan of Guangdong Province.

In September 2019, he became the founding member and governing unit of China Artificial Intelligence Education Association.

In November, South China Normal University's "Lingnan traditional dance inheritance base" was selected as the national excellent traditional Chinese culture inheritance base for colleges and universities.
