Development history
In 1938, the land purchased by the Council of the French concession was used as the foundation for the new office building. In June 1940, the French government surrendered to Germany and the construction of office buildings was shelved. In 1941, the Council decided to build a park for French children, which was once known as a children's Park. Due to the protest of the Chinese, it was forced to open to the outside world on January 30, 1942. In memory of the former diplomat lanwiener of the French Consulate General in Shanghai who died in the anti German war in 1939, it was named lanwiener Park, also known as dume park. In 1943, it was renamed Taishan park. After the victory of the Anti Japanese War, it was renamed Linsen Park in 1946. On May 28, 1950, the Shanghai Municipal People's Government approved the change to Xiangyang park. In 1961, the Capital Construction Committee of the Municipal People's Committee approved the incorporation of the adjacent 1900 square meters of land into the park, slightly expanding it to today's scale.
Main attractions
There are both regular layout and Natural layout in the garden. In the space between the two, we can make full use of the hedgerow to separate and produce the effect of seeing the big from the small. There are French Wutong crooked Avenue, symmetrical flower beds, and a distinctive French park built in the park with wide corridors, winding paths, crooked ways and ingenious greening layout. There are nearly 100 kinds of flowers and trees in the park, such as cherry blossom, camellia, azalea, Begonia and rose, to add to the scenery of the four seasons.
Platanus Avenue: a wide north-south Avenue in the garden gate, with tall and vigorous Platanus trees on both sides, blocking out the sun, is very spectacular. On both sides of the road, there are French style axisymmetric geometric flower beds, which are planted with four seasons flowers, and complement each other with the flower beds on Huaihai middle road outside the garden.
Fountain: it is located in the northwest corner of the garden, covering an area of about 60 square meters. Beside the fountain is a terrazzo Gallery, under which rose is planted, and on which Wisteria is wound. In the south of the lake, maple, Podocarpus and Podocarpus are planted, and several Taihu stones stand among them. In the north of the pool, there is a bamboo forest with rich green.
Big lawn: in the middle of the garden, covering an area of 1200 square meters. In the northwest corner of the lawn, there is a large flower bed with European style, where all kinds of seasonal flowers are planted. Behind the flowerbed stands a tall coral column, which is combined with the height of more than ten Euonymus japonicus trees. Standing on the lawn and looking forward to the Catholic Church on Xiangyang North Road, it's very interesting.
Hexagonal pavilion: it is located at the focus of the central axis of the Suzuki Avenue at the gate of the garden. It is the focus for visitors to view after entering the garden. Pavilion area of about 36 square meters, reinforced concrete structure. Green glass tile top, hexagonal double eaves, surrounded by Shuimo stone stool and railing. North of the pavilion is the big lawn. There is a rectangular flower bed at the junction of the south side and the Suzuki Avenue, which can set off the pavilion and separate the space.
High platform: there is a platform nearly 1 meter high in the east of the park, which was formed after the construction of underground air defense works from 1965 to 1970, covering an area of about 2000 square meters. There is a 10 meter long terrazzo corridor on the platform. In the north of the corridor are stone benches and balustrades; in the East and west of the corridor are respectively connected with the newspaper reading corridor and scaffolding; in front of the corridor are stout cypresses and several Camellia plants.
