History of the villa

Wofo temple was first built in Zhenguan period of Tang Dynasty. Because of its unique mountains, beautiful rocks and abundant springs, it has become a good place for people to go for outings as early as yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties. Yuan Zhongdao and Yu Yizheng of Ming Dynasty, Zhu YIZUN, song Luo, Zheng Banqiao of Qing Dynasty and other famous writers have left their chanting poems here.

Wofo temple has always had the characteristics of a royal temple: the abbot of the temple was appointed by the emperor, and the internal money (Treasury bank) was paid for the repair of the temple. During the reign of emperor Yingzong of the Yuan Dynasty (1321), the bronze Reclining Buddha weighing about 500000 tons was cast. From then on to the completion of the overhaul in the 13th year of Yongzheng, the reclining Buddha Temple has become a wonder in the history of religion and architecture for the coexistence of two reclining Buddhas over 400 years.

In the Yongzheng and Qianlong dynasties, the West Road of the temple was opened up as a palace. At that time, Qingya, the abbot of the temple, was an eminent monk. After Qianlong succeeded to the throne, he invited Qingya back from Tiantong temple in the South and ordered him to preside over the Dharma seat of the reclining Buddha temple until his death.
