The predecessor of Shanghai Conservatory of music is the National Conservatory of music founded by Cai Yuanpei, a great democratic revolutionist, outstanding educator and thinker, and Dr. Xiao Youmei, a music educator on November 27, 1927. Shanghai Conservatory of music was originally called "National Conservatory of music" (in the official record of the Ministry of education of the national government, "Shanghai National Conservatory of music" is the official name)

After the victory of the Anti Japanese war in 1945, the national Shanghai Conservatory of music, which returned to Shanghai from Chongqing, accepted the pseudo "National Conservatory of music" (the third branch of the cram school of the national Shanghai temporary University), and merged with the private Shanghai Conservatory of music into the national Shanghai Conservatory of music.

On June 25, 1949, the Shanghai Municipal military control commission of the Chinese people's Liberation Army took over the national Shanghai Conservatory of music. On September 1, the school changed its name to Shanghai Branch of the National Conservatory of music. On January 28, 1950, the Shanghai Branch of the National Conservatory of music was renamed the Shanghai Branch of the Central Conservatory of music. In 1952, the Shanghai Branch of the Central Conservatory of music was renamed the East China branch of the Central Conservatory of music. In the same year, the Music Department of the College of Arts and science of Jinling Women's University and the music group of Shanghai Xingzhi art normal school were merged into the college.

On November 20, 1956, the East China branch of the Central Conservatory of music changed its name to "Shanghai Conservatory of music", which is still in use today. It is a key college directly under the Ministry of culture. In the same year, some teachers from the Music Department of East China Normal University were incorporated.

In 1964, he began postgraduate education and recruited postgraduates majoring in vocal music and violin.

Since 1978, the college has set up three master's degree authorization points: Musicology, composition and composition technology theory, and music performing arts. Later, they were unified and merged into the master's degree authorization points of musicology, and the professional direction of music education was added.
