Shanghai Institute of Physical Education

Shanghai Institute of physical education, founded in 1952, is the earliest sports institution of higher learning established after the founding of new China. The landmark building, Lvwa building, formerly known as the old Shanghai government building, has a long history and is a key cultural relic protection building in Shanghai. There is also the Museum of Chinese martial arts in the school. It is the first professional museum in China to display the long history of Chinese martial arts and reproduce the traditional culture of the Chinese nation.

Historical evolution

In November 1952, the Department of physical education of Nanjing University, East China Normal University and Nanjing Jinling Women's University merged to establish East China Institute of physical education, which is the predecessor of Shanghai Institute of physical education.

In February 1956, East China Institute of physical education was officially renamed Shanghai Institute of physical education. The name of the school was inscribed by Shu Tong, a calligrapher. Marshal he long, then Vice Premier of the State Council and director of the State Sports Commission, personally visited Shanghai and selected 650 Qingyuan ring road as the new school site. The school moved to the new site in the summer of that year.

In 1957, graduate education began.

In May 1972, Shanghai Institute of physical education merged with East China Normal University, Shanghai Normal University, Shanghai Institute of education and Shanghai part-time work study normal university to establish Shanghai Normal University, which was renamed as the Department of physical education of Shanghai Normal University.

In 1978, with the approval of the State Council, the former Shanghai Institute of physical education was restored. In the same year, postgraduate enrollment was resumed.

In 1981, the University obtained the right to confer master's degree, becoming the first university in China to obtain the right to confer master's degree.

In 1986, the University obtained the right to confer doctor's degree, becoming the first university in China to obtain the right to confer doctor's degree.

In June 2001, the State Council decided that Shanghai Institute of physical education should be transferred to other places and jointly managed by the State General Administration of physical education and the Shanghai Municipal People's government, with Shanghai as the main city.

In October 2002, the former Shanghai Institute of physical education, Shanghai Institute of sports technology and Shanghai Institute of sports science merged to form a new Shanghai Institute of physical education.

In 2003, the University became the first level discipline of physical education doctoral degree awarding unit. In the same year, with the approval of the Ministry of human resources and social security and the national post doctoral Management Committee, Shanghai Institute of physical education set up a post doctoral research mobile station of physical education.

In September 2010, the State General Administration of sports and the Shanghai Municipal People's government held the signing and unveiling ceremony of jointly building Shanghai Institute of physical education and China table tennis college.

In November 2015, China table tennis college passed the audit and became the highest college level affiliated training base of ITTF.

In September 2017, Shanghai Institute of physical education was shortlisted in the first batch of national "double first-class" world-class discipline construction universities.

In the same year, with the approval of the State Council, the doping testing laboratory jointly built by the State General Administration of sports and the Shanghai Municipal People's government started construction.

In March 2018, Shanghai Institute of physical education became the pilot unit of "high level local universities" in Shanghai. In June, the University was approved as one of the first batch of projects in the leading plan for the construction of first-class undergraduate courses in Shanghai colleges and universities. In September, China's first E-sports interpretation major opened in Shanghai Institute of physical education.

In August 2019, the signing and unveiling ceremony for the co construction of China gymnastics Institute was held in Shanghai Institute of physical education. China Gymnastics Association and Shanghai Institute of physical education reached a consensus to jointly establish China gymnastics Institute. In September, the opening ceremony of Shanghai Institute of physical education and Macao Polytechnic co training doctoral degree in physical education was held in Macao Polytechnic, which is the first joint doctoral degree in Physical Education in Macao.

By the end of 2019, the university has established cooperative relations with 115 universities and institutions in 31 countries and regions, training more than 1800 students from more than 60 countries and regions, including the United States, France, Germany, Japan and South Korea.
