Zhang Qian, a famous diplomat, explorer and pioneer of the Silk Road in the Western Han Dynasty, was born in Bowang village, 2 kilometers south of Chenggu County, Hanzhong, on the Bank of the Hanjiang River. The cemetery is located in raojiaying village, 2.3km west of the county. It is now the memorial hall of Zhang Qian, one of the first batch of provincial key cultural relics protection units announced by Shaanxi Provincial People's Government in 1956.
Zhang Qian's tomb faces south, 35.6 meters long from north to south, 20 meters wide from east to west, and 5 meters high. All around, the ancient cypresses are towering and the bamboo shadows are dancing. In front of the tomb, a pair of Han Dynasty Stone Tiger sculptors are bold, majestic and generous.
As a whole, the mausoleum is symmetrically distributed with Xiandian as its central axis. Inside the hall are large murals painted by famous calligrapher and painter Zhang Chongguang, such as the painting of Zhang Qian's mission to the western regions and the painting of hollowing out. The East and west side halls are the exhibition rooms, which respectively display the exhibition of "Zhang Qian's life and great achievements" and the folk art exhibition with distinctive Southern Shaanxi characteristics. The gate of the que style is made of blue bricks and tubular tiles, which are simple and generous. The two que are opposite, and the cornices and brackets represent the architectural characteristics of the palace Que in the Han Dynasty.
In 1986 and 1993, two "Zhang Qian international academic conferences" were held here, vigorously promoting Zhang Qian's pioneering spirit of "being the first in the world", which has had a great impact in the world. Nowadays, Chenggu holds Zhang Qian culture and Art Festival once a year.
