Confucian temple, also known as Confucius Temple, Confucius Temple, wenxuanwang temple, Zhisheng temple, etc., is the highest level ancient architectural complex in Tianjin history and the largest preserved ancient architectural complex in Tianjin today. According to historical records, in the second year after the death of Confucius, the king of Lu, AI Gong, ordered that the three former residences in Confucius' Palace should be converted into temples and worshipped at the age of 18. Later, Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty issued an edict that "Confucian temples should be set up in every county." By the Ming and Qing Dynasties, there were more than 1560 Confucian temples in China. Tianjin Confucian temple was built in 1436. In 1404, Tianjin set up weijiancheng. In 1405 and 1406, Tianjin Zuowei and Tianjin Youwei were added to govern the area from the south of Haihe River to the east of Dezhou along the south canal. There were 16800 Weizu, including their families. Whether these children can go to school or not will directly affect the morale of the army and even the stability of the local people. Therefore, education has become a top priority. In addition, after the Yongle Emperor set up his capital in Beijing, Tianjin soon became the transportation hub of waterway and dry road at that time, and the population expanded rapidly. These people who gathered in Tianjin from all over the world also faced the problem of urgent need for education. In 1436, Cheng Fu, the imperial censor of tixue, put forward the idea of Shangzuo, and demanded the establishment of Weixue in Tianjin. So Zhu Sheng, the commander of Tianjin Zuowei, donated one of his houses as the site of the school. So far, the first official school was built in Tianjin. According to the imperial edict of Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty, "Confucius temples are set up in every county and Prefecture", which stipulates that Confucian temples should be built while schools are set up. This is also the reason why government run schools were called Temple schools in history. Therefore, the Confucian temple in Tianjin was built at the same time as the Weixue in Tianjin. The Confucian temple built at the beginning of the Tang Dynasty was not what we see now, but just a temple dedicated to Confucius. In the early Song Dynasty, the Confucian temple began to improve and gradually separated from the school, which formed the architectural pattern of "left temple and right school".

synonym
Yueyang Confucian temple generally refers to the Confucian Temple (Yueyang Confucian temple, Hunan Province)
Confucian temple, also known as Confucius Temple, is on the campus of Yueyang No.2 Middle School, across the street from the famous Yueyang Tower. It is the place where Confucius was worshipped in ancient times. The original Banchi, Zhuangyuan bridge, cloister and Dacheng hall were one of the great feats of Yuezhou.
Historical origin
The Confucian temple, which has been rebuilt or repaired for dozens of times, has a Dacheng hall. It has five rooms wide and three rooms deep, with a front porch. It covers an area of 548 square meters and is 16 meters high. It has a double eaves on the top of the mountain. Its eaves are very upturned, which is of the architectural style of the Song Dynasty. In particular, there are 16 crossbars in the hall. Between the stone piers and the pillars, there is a drum shaped crossbar about 30 cm thick, called wood, which is rare in ancient architecture. Wood can be moisture-proof, to ensure that the pillars are dry and not rotten, so the pillars in Dacheng hall are still intact. In August of 1488 (the first year of Hongzhi of Ming Dynasty), an overhaul was carried out. On the ceiling, there was a painting of "Panlong Xifeng", which is still vaguely recognizable. It is a treasure of cultural relics.

After the Republic of China, the Confucian temple was seriously demolished, leaving only Dacheng hall, east-west veranda, Dacheng gate, Lingxing gate, panchi, Zhuangyuan bridge, etc. the style of these buildings is rare in ancient architecture.
In 2001, Yueyang Confucian temple was listed as a national key cultural relics protection unit. Previously, it had experienced a large-scale maintenance, but did not completely solve the roof leakage and other problems. In 2003, with the approval of the State Administration of cultural relics, Yueyang Confucian temple was put down for overhaul again.
Original style
Up to 2006, in the principle of maintaining the original style, the damaged components of Dacheng hall have been reinforced and repaired, so that the roof leakage and other problems can be solved. At the same time, the East and West veranda rooms, famous official ancestral hall and Xiangxian ancestral hall on both sides of Dacheng hall were rebuilt.
