Dongtai Road
According to records, Dongtai Road was built in 1902, when it was called Taishan Road. In the 32nd year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu, the name of the deputy general manager of the French Concession Council was changed to rue Hennequin. In 1943, it was renamed Dongtai in Jiangsu Province. Dongtai Road is located in the northeast of Luwan District, near Xizang South Road and Fuxing Middle Road, starting from Chongde road in the north and Zhaozhou road in the south. It is 586 meters long, 12.1-12.6 meters wide and 7.4 meters wide.
The formation of twists and turns
After liberation until the 1980s, Dongtai Road was residential along the road. In May 1985, Liuhe road beside Dongtai Road was opened up as a comprehensive market for clothing and small department stores. Influenced by it, Dongtai Road formed a flower and bird market, and then gradually fell into the cold. In the spring of 1986, Kuaiji Road, across from Tibet South Road, spontaneously formed the earliest stall cultural relics market in Shanghai. In 1988, under the sponsorship of the Municipal Cultural Administration Commission, the Municipal Bureau of industry and commerce, the Municipal Public Security Bureau and other departments, the individual dealers of antiques in Kuaiji market were introduced into Dongtai Road flower and bird market, where the "Liuhe road old crafts market" was established. It became the first supervised old crafts market in Shanghai approved by the Shanghai Municipal Administration of cultural relics, and licensed to operate in China and foreign countries after the first year of the Republic of China China's ceramic ware, gold and silver ware, bronze ware and other metal ware, jade ware, lacquerware, glassware, carvings of various materials, sculptures, furniture, calligraphy and painting, tablet stickers, tablet extension, books, literature, embroidery, stamps, currency, arts and crafts and other old crafts within the scope of cultural supervision. This is the beginning of the formation of Shanghai Dongtai Road antique market.
Dongtai Road
Dongtai Road is not impressive, but the archway is tall. The plaque of "Dongtai Road antique market" inscribed by Liu Danzhai, a famous calligrapher and painter, is powerful and eye-catching. It still marks and publicizes its reputation. The goods are colorful, and the streets are full of dazzling colors. The shops, the large and small sheds are piled up there intentionally or unintentionally, which is very eye-catching. It has the good name of "Shanghai Liulichang" and is a famous cultural and antique signboard market in Shanghai, but even in Shanghai, it is not familiar to people.
On both sides of Dongtai Road, there are many handicraft shops, antique shops and second-hand goods shops of different sizes. There are about 200 of them. In the Dongtai Road antique market, the protagonists are ceramic, bronze, tin, jade, bamboo, wood, calligraphy and painting, and even birdcages, costumes, coins, etc. In addition, due to the rise of "Shanghai fever" overseas, the daily necessities reflecting the prosperous urban scene of Shanghai in the 1920s and 1930s have become popular and popular. Cigarette brands, calendar cards, porcelain chess, mahjong, old-fashioned gramophone, "Shengli" old radio razor, electric fan, lighter, cricket equipment, kerosene lampshade, "Underwood" typewriter, and so on, can be said to have everything.
The consumer groups of Dongtai Road antique market also have great changes, the most obvious is the obvious increase of domestic customers, which is quite different from the previous "support market" relying entirely on overseas tourists. Some consumers are interested in the middle price porcelain in the market, as well as the old utensils of the 1920s and 1930s. As for the real sense of antiques, due to the high price and the need for considerable identification ability, they rarely appear in stalls
They all rely on the word-of-mouth of their acquaintances.
Many people in the industry gather here to buy and sell, and there are many tourists. The stalls in the middle of the street are mostly handicrafts and folk goods, while the shops on both sides are often solid antique sites. Sometimes, in the small shop filled with the smell of mechanical antiques, people can easily hear the mechanical clucking sound, the gentle old bell, the cuckoo probe's call, and even the rustle of the old-fashioned ceiling fan rotating overhead, all of which imply the existence or disappearance of time. Out of this small room, you will find that you are on Dongtai Road.
Once prosperous
Throughout the more than 20 years of development of Shanghai antique and old crafts market, the 1990s is the peak period of operation, and Shanghai Dongtai Road antique market is no exception. Since its formation, Shanghai Dongtai Road antique market has been famous for its "strange, special, strange and rare" products. It has a wide range of antique handicrafts with different characteristics that can not be found elsewhere. In addition, the market has not only the traditional Chinese stall trading method, but also the more professional and hidden trading characteristics in line with modern interior, attracting people from various cultural and historical backgrounds to purchase.
The business objects of Dongtai Road antique market are mainly foreign consulates, tourists, guests at home and abroad, and craftsmen. With the rise of overseas "Shanghai fever", Shanghai Dongtai road antiques are favored by tourists and antiques and crafts enthusiasts at home and abroad. They gradually form a certain influence in the antique market at home and abroad, and become Shanghai's tourist destination after the Bund and Yu Garden, attracting many tourists from home and abroad to come to treasure. Dongtai Road antique market was named "Shanghai civilized market" for five consecutive years, and won the honorary title of "national civilized market" from 1993 to 1995.
Since then, Dongtai Road antique market has become a market with the same status as Beijing Panjiayuan. All kinds of people are gathered here. Every day there are many tourists and people are very popular. The real private antique Shengyi is also flourishing under the drive of the outside market. Dongtai Road antique market is full of Chinese and foreign antique collectors who are engaged in tourism, sightseeing and shopping, forming a new market landscape. When many people visit Dongtai Road, they also like the color and the feeling of history. They prefer to use the lens to depict the scenes and people's expressions, temptation, desire, fantasy and addiction People who are good at nostalgia, past people, the feelings they encounter and the past they indulge in can occupy their hearts for a long time.
Today's decline
However, the extreme will turn against the extreme, and the extreme will decline. With the popularity of the market, the antique business is more and more prosperous. Behind the prosperity of Dongtai Road antique market, it also begins to decline. The booming antique collection market makes some antique dealers unable to get good goods, resulting in a continuous shortage. For the sake of economic profit, some antique dealers began to go astray, so that fake goods flooded the market, and eventually led to the decline of the antique market. Later, Fuyou road antique crafts market took advantage of the situation and gradually replaced Dongtai Road as "Shanghai's first antique market".
At present, Dongtai Road antique crafts market is still full of antiques on the surface, but its real good things are rare. And the road market of the market affects the appearance of the city and the life of nearby residents. However, Kuaiji road and Dongtai Road have cultivated the first group of discerning antiques collectors and powerful antiques merchants in Shanghai since the reform and opening up. This is a history of antiques, and no one can deny it.
