Introduction to Beisi
Beisi, also known as Baoen temple, is the oldest Buddhist temple in Suzhou, with a history of more than 1700 years. It was built in the chiwu period of the Three Kingdoms (238-251). According to legend, it was built by Mrs. Wu Tai, the mother of Sun Quan in the eastern Wu Dynasty. It was called tongxuan temple in ancient times and Kaiyuan Temple in the early Tang Dynasty. It was renamed Baoen temple in the period of 954-960 after five dynasties.
The North Temple Pagoda stands majestically on the east side of Renmin Road in the north of Suzhou city. It is a typical Pagoda with brick and wood structure. It is especially majestic among the pagodas in Suzhou and has always been an important symbol of Suzhou. The tower was first built in the Liang Dynasty (502-556) of the Southern Dynasty and rebuilt in the 23rd year of Shaoxing (1153) of the Southern Song Dynasty. The eight or nine storey pagoda is of the same type as the Liuhe Pagoda in Hangzhou. The tower, 76 meters high, is the tallest in the south of the Yangtze River.
Brief introduction of Beisi pagoda
On the east side of the North Temple Tower is nanmu Guanyin hall, which was rebuilt in 1612. It is one of the most complete ancient buildings of Ming Dynasty in Suzhou. The structure of the hall is solid and in good condition. The statues of Buddha and xumizuo are exquisitely carved. There are dozens of exquisitely painted paintings with harmonious colors and unique style among the pillars. In the south of Guanyin hall, a corridor is built, displaying the largest lacquer carving in China, the painting of flourishing age, also known as the painting of prosperous Suzhou. With a total length of 32 meters and a height of 2 meters, the picture reproduces the prosperity of Suzhou in the "Qianlong heyday" of the Qing Dynasty. There is a rare stone carving work of Yuan Dynasty named Zhang Shicheng's memorial tablet in the Pavilion behind the tower, which is of great historical and artistic value. Tabei is a classical garden with mountains and waters as its artistic conception. It has a wide pool and ethereal rocks. Overlooking the towering shadow of the tower in the water, it has a unique taste.
