In 1898, Zhang Zhidong, governor of Huguang, wrote a letter to Emperor Guangxu, formally inviting him to set up Hubei agricultural school. In March, at the order of Zhang Zhidong, Brill, the first American teacher, went to Zhuodaoquan outside Binyang gate of Wuchang City (now Zhuodaoquan temple on the east side of central China Normal University) to survey the foundation of the agricultural school, which officially opened in October.
In the 29th year of Guangxu (1903), it was expanded into a higher agricultural school in Hubei Province. The school was moved to baoji'an in the north of Wuchang City. More than ten Japanese teachers were recruited to start higher education.
In 1911, the revolution of 1911 broke out and the school running period of the Qing government ended.
In the first year of the Republic of China (1912), the school was rebuilt in the name of Hubei Provincial Agricultural School of a type. After the evolution of Hubei provincial first senior agricultural school and Hubei Provincial Second Senior agricultural school, the school was closed in 1928.
In 1930, Hubei Province set up Hubei Provincial Rural normal college, and in 1931, Hubei Provincial College of education was formally established at the original site of baoji'an to provide undergraduate education.
In 1933, the Preparatory Office of agricultural college was set up in national Wuhan University, and a "simple agricultural class" was held in xujiapeng cotton farm in the autumn of 1935.
In 1936, the national Wuhan University officially established the agricultural college. In the summer of that year, the Hubei provincial government stopped running the Hubei Provincial Institute of education. Then, in 1937, the Hubei Provincial Agricultural College was established in the original site.
In 1938, the Japanese army invaded Wuhan, and national Wuhan University moved westward to Leshan, and its agricultural college was incorporated into the Agricultural College of National Central University by the order of the Ministry of education; Hubei Provincial Agricultural College was transferred westward to Enshi by the order of Hubei provincial government, and was incorporated into Hubei Provincial union secondary school or above, and renamed Wufeng Agricultural College Branch of Hubei Provincial union secondary school or above.
In November 1940, Hubei Provincial Agricultural College was transformed into Hubei Provincial Agricultural College. The Department of Agronomy was set up for four years.
In 1945, after the victory of the Anti Japanese War, Hubei Agricultural College moved back to the original site of baoji'an in Wuchang from Enshi in December that year.
In May 1946, the Agricultural College of national Wuhan University was restored by order of the Ministry of education.
Huazhong Agricultural College
In 1952, Huazhong Agricultural College was established with the Agricultural College of Wuhan University and Hubei Agricultural College as a whole and some departments (branches) of the former Sun Yat sen University, Nanchang University, Henan University, Guangxi University, Hunan Agricultural College and Jiangxi Agricultural College. The school is located in baoji'an, the former site of Hubei Agricultural College. Undergraduate students were recruited in that year, and the first batch of graduate students were recruited in the next year.
In 1955, the Forestry Department of Huazhong Agricultural College was incorporated into Nanjing Forestry University (now Nanjing Forestry University).

On October 4, Huazhong Agricultural University was approved by the State Council as a national key university, directly under the Ministry of agriculture.
In November 1981, with the approval of the State Council, Huazhong Agricultural University became one of the first batch of authorized units with doctor's and master's degrees in China.
