the Republic of China era
The history of running South China University of technology can be traced back to the 1930s and even the late Qing Dynasty. The Institute of technology of Sun Yat sen University, as the foundation of its establishment, originated from the Institute of science and technology of Sun Yat sen University, which was established in 1931. It was established in August 1934 and moved to Shipai, Guangzhou with Sun Yat sen University as a whole in September, and now runs on the site of South China University of technology. The Institute of technology of South China United University is formed by the merger of the Institute of technology of Guangdong National University established in 1930 and the Institute of science and technology of Guangzhou University established in 1940. The College of technology of Lingnan University can be traced back to the College of technology of Lingnan University, which was founded in 1930. The predecessor of Guangdong Polytechnic College (hereinafter referred to as "Polytechnic College") is the first class a Polytechnic School of Guangdong Province (historically known as "Polytechnic College") established in 1918, which can be traced back to the Guangdong Technology Bureau, an educational institution founded by the Qing government in 1910. The founding of the people's Republic of China
In 1951, the Government Affairs Council of the Central People's Government approved the preparation for the establishment of South China Institute of technology.
In 1952, South China University of Technology (former South China Institute of Technology) was formally established, based on the then Sun Yat sen University Institute of technology, South China United University Institute of technology, Lingnan University Engineering Department and Guangdong Polytechnic College, together with Hunan University, Guangxi University, Nanchang University, Wuhan Jiaotong University (later merged into Wuhan University) and Wuchang Zhonghua University (now Wuhan University) It was formed by engineering related majors from six universities, including Wuhan University, Wuhan University, etc., which gathered all the most outstanding engineering departments in central and southern China at that time, and laid a solid foundation of Engineering in South China University of technology.
In 1952 and 1953, after the adjustment of colleges and departments, the water conservancy discipline, specialty, teachers and students, and equipment of South China Institute of technology were transferred to establish Wuhan University of water conservancy and electric power (merged into Wuhan University in 2000).
In 1953, the major of thermal power plant installation in the Mechanical Engineering Department of South China Institute of technology, the major of power plant distribution network and distribution system in the electrical engineering department, the major of small and medium-sized hydropower station in the water conservancy engineering department, and the major of motor in the power station substation in the electrical engineering department were transferred to Wuhan Huazhong Institute of Technology (the predecessor of Huazhong University of science and Technology).
In 1953, the railway major of South China Institute of technology was transferred to Changsha to establish Changsha Railway Institute (in 2000, it merged to form Central South University).
In 1954, the inorganic engineering major of South China Institute of technology was transferred to East China Institute of Chemical Technology (the predecessor of East China University of science and Technology);
In 1954, the Department of water conservancy of South China Institute of technology was transferred to Wuhan to establish Wuhan Institute of water conservancy and electric power (merged into Wuhan University in 2000).
In 1955, the teachers and equipment of Surveying and mapping major of South China Institute of technology were transferred to Wuhan to establish Wuhan University of Surveying and Mapping Science and Technology (merged into Wuhan University in 2000).
In 1956, the major of telecommunication engineering of South China Institute of technology, Nanjing Institute of technology and Jiaotong University merged to form Chengdu Institute of Telecommunication Engineering (the predecessor of University of Electronic Science and Technology).
In 1958, the Department of Telecommunication Engineering (radio department) of South China Institute of technology was established by Professor Feng Bingquan, Professor Xu Bingzheng and some teachers and students. In the same year, South China Institute of technology was divided into South China Institute of technology and South China Institute of chemical technology.
In October 1960, South China Institute of technology was designated as one of the 64 national key universities by the CPC Central Committee.
In 1962, South China Institute of technology and South China Institute of Chemical Technology merged into South China Institute of technology.
Ten years of Cultural Revolution
During the cultural revolution, the University's teaching and research work was greatly affected, and was divided into South China Institute of technology and Guangdong Institute of chemical technology.
In February 1978, the University (then South China Institute of technology and Guangdong Institute of Chemical Technology) was among the first batch of national key universities (commonly known as 88 national key universities) announced by the Ministry of education. In the same year, South China Institute of technology and Guangdong Institute of Chemical Technology merged to establish South China Institute of technology.
After the reform and opening up
On November 26, 1981, with the approval of the State Council, the University became one of the first batch of doctoral and master degree awarding units in China.
In 1988, South China Institute of technology changed its name to South China University of technology.
In 1993, the implementation of the National Education Commission and the Guangdong Provincial People's government to build, in the National University Department of the province to build a precedent.
In 1995, through the preliminary examination of "211 Project" department, the first batch of universities entered the ranks of national key construction facing the 21st century.

Approved by the Ministry of science and technology and the Ministry of education, the National University Science Park of South China University of technology was established;
In 2001, with the implementation of a new round of ministry provincial key joint construction, the university entered the ranks of the first batch of national high-level university construction ("985 Project") and the first batch of approved pilot national demonstration software colleges.
In 2005, the Ministry of education and Guangdong provincial government decided to build the South China University of technology in the second phase of "985 Project".
In 2007, it passed the undergraduate teaching evaluation of the Ministry of education with excellent results; with the approval of the Ministry of education, it became one of the first batch of 17 Pilot Universities in the reform of postgraduate training mechanism.
In 2010, the Ministry of education and Guangdong Province decided to continue to focus on the construction of South China University of technology, and strive to promote the construction process of world-class and high-level universities.
In December 2011, the Confucius Institute of Lancaster University in the United Kingdom, jointly organized by South China University of technology and Lancaster University, was inaugurated.
In April 2013, the Confucius Institute of the University of Idaho, which was jointly established by South China University of technology, Hanban and the University of Idaho, was inaugurated. In May, it was rated as a national university with typical employment experience by the Ministry of education.
In September 2014, under the joint promotion of South China University of technology and Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital (Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences), the medical school of South China University of technology was officially established, and won the 45th place in the "comprehensive ranking of China's best medical schools in 2017".
In January 2017, South China University of technology cooperated with Tianhe District to build Tianhe Hospital Affiliated to South China University of Technology (the second people's Hospital of Tianhe District). In February, Guangzhou first people's hospital was listed as "the Second Affiliated Hospital of South China University of technology", becoming the First Affiliated Hospital directly under the University. In March, the Ministry of education, Guangdong Province, Guangzhou City and South China University of technology jointly established Guangzhou International Campus of South China University of technology. The University cooperated with Cambridge University, Harvard University, Nanyang University of technology and other world-class universities to build six colleges. In May, the German Audi Ingolstadt Confucius Institute, jointly built by South China University of technology, Audi automobile company, Ingolstadt municipal government and Ingolstadt University of technology, was inaugurated. The University joined the engineering education and Research Alliance of Chinese and British universities. In June, South China University of technology, as the only university in Guangdong, was selected as the national innovation and entrepreneurship demonstration base; Guangdong Provincial People's hospital was listed as "Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital Affiliated to South China University of technology", becoming the Second Affiliated Hospital directly under the University. In September, South China University of technology was selected as the national "double first-class" (world-class university and first-class discipline) world-class university construction University (Class A). In November, the school was awarded the first national civilized campus honorary title. In the same year, it was selected as the national "innovation and entrepreneurship" demonstration base.
In March 2018, it was selected into the first batch of "new engineering" research and practice projects of the Ministry of education. In July, the State Administration of science, technology and industry for national defense and the Ministry of Education jointly issued a document, confirming that 8 newly built universities will be added during the 13th Five Year Plan period, among which South China University of technology will be selected as a national university with typical experience in innovation and entrepreneurship in 2018. In November, it was selected as "key construction universities of high-level universities" in the new round of high-level university construction plan of Guangdong Province, and the first batch of excellent traditional Chinese culture inheritance bases of the Ministry of education.
In February 2019, the University was recognized by the Ministry of education as one of the first batch of Universities' scientific and technological achievements transformation and technology transfer bases.

Scientific research achievements
At the 15th China Patent Award Presentation Conference held in Beijing, three patents of South China University of technology won the China Patent Excellence Award, namely "remote control method and system for end ambient temperature and cold source load of central air conditioning", "a single longitudinal mode fiber laser with low noise, narrow linewidth and high power" and "a multi-stage drawing manufacturing method for micro grooved tube".
In 2012, the number of patent applications was 1722, and the number of effective invention patents was 1954 (ranking seventh in China's universities); in 2009-2013, it won 13 Chinese patent awards (the number of awards ranked first in China's universities); it was awarded the honorary titles of "national enterprise and institution intellectual property demonstration unit", "national advanced collective of patent system", "Guangdong Intellectual Property Demonstration Unit" and so on.
In 2016, Wu shuoxian, Professor of South China University of technology and academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, won the outstanding contribution award of science and technology of Guangdong Province in 2016, which is the third outstanding contribution award of science and technology of Guangdong Province that the university has won, making the university the outstanding contribution award of science and technology of Guangdong Province
