Shaanxi Provincial Library, founded in September 1909, is the largest public library in Shaanxi Province and the earliest public library in Western China. Originally named Shaanxi library, the provincial map is attached to the Academic Affairs Office in Liangfu street, Xi'an. On September 30, 2001, the new Shaanxi Provincial Library was officially opened to the public. The new library is located at the intersection of Chang'an North Road and south 2nd Ring Road. The main building has 12 floors and the podium has 6 floors. It has a designed collection capacity of 4 million books and 2000 reading seats.

Historical evolution
In August 1909, Shaanxi library was established.
In 1915, it was attached with the exhibition hall of quangong and the forest of Steles in Xi'an, which was named Shaanxi Provincial Library.
In 1927, it changed its name to the first Zhongshan Library of Shaanxi Province, abolished the exhibition hall of quangong, and added Shaanxi civilian library and Shaanxi Provincial 43 library.
In 1931, it was renamed the first library of Shaanxi Province.
In April 1937, it was renamed Xijing Library of Shaanxi Province.
In 1944, the original Xi'an stele forest and historical relics were put under the Shaanxi History Museum.
In May 1949, it was taken over by the government of Shaanxi Gansu Ningxia border region and renamed Xi'an Library of Shaanxi Gansu Ningxia border region.
In April 1950, after the establishment of Shaanxi Provincial People's government, the library was renamed Xi'an People's Library of Shaanxi Province.
On July 2, 1953, it was officially named Shaanxi Provincial Library.
On September 30, 2001, the new library of Shaanxi Provincial Library was built and put into use.

By the end of 2017, Shaanxi Provincial Library has collected more than 320000 ancient books, including 5594 volumes of Qisha collection (6263 volumes of Quanjing) in song and Yuan Dynasty, national orphans such as Xiangyang County annals, detailed Yugong annals, Tongguan county annals, and shiqinglu in Ming Dynasty, supplement and correction of Wang Zhuangyuan's annotation classification of poems by Mr. Dongpo in Yuan Dynasty, and annotation of Chuci in Ming Dynasty 》"Duishan Wenji", "Meipi Ji" and other rare books in China. There are more than 1500 local chronicles, among which there are about 300 species and more than 700 local chronicles of Shaanxi Province.

As of August 2018, Shaanxi Provincial Library has collected 178 volumes of Taiwan's "local chronicles of China Series", 1144 volumes of Shaanxi literature and history materials, 95 volumes of Shaanxi Provincial chronicles, 445 volumes of Shaanxi Provincial Industry chronicles, 191 volumes of Shaanxi Provincial Local Chronicles, and 138 kinds of Shaanxi Provincial Yearbook.

The rare local chronicles series of Shaanxi library collection was jointly published by Beijing Library Press and Shaanxi Provincial Library in 2006. It contains 55 kinds of rare local chronicles collected by Shaanxi Provincial Library. From the regional aspect, the local chronicles cover the whole Shaanxi Province. There are 23 species in Guanzhong, 18 species in southern Shaanxi, 10 species in Northern Shaanxi, and 3 species in other provinces.
