Ye's ancestral hall, or Xuzhi hall, was built in the Chenghua period of Ming Dynasty, with a history of more than 530 years. Covering an area of about 1000 square meters, Ye's ancestral hall is a magnificent building supported by 54 thick columns, which is divided into upper, middle and lower hall. The lower hall is a place for the clan to hold activities and play drums; the middle hall is a sacrificial hall for the clan to hold sacrificial ceremonies or major activities; the upper hall is a three room two-story building connected with the middle hall, and the upper floor is a place where the ancestral tablets of the clan are placed for the clan to worship. In 1989, 80% of the scenes in Ju Dou, a film directed by Zhang Yimou and starred by Gong Li, were shot here. Now it still retains its original appearance when it was shot.
Ye's ancestral hall
Fuqing Ye clan ancestral hall is a family ancestral hall building built in the 43rd year of Wanli in Ming Dynasty (1615 AD), which belongs to the place where ye clan worships ancestors and sages. It is located in houye village, Gangtou Town, Fuqing City. It is the ancestral hall of Ye Xianggao, the head of the Ming cabinet. It faces south from the north and is composed of stage, patio and hall. According to some records, the temple was built by Ye Xianggao himself, but there is no historical basis. The temple faces south from the north, and the double gate is engraved with a plaque inscribed with "Yuanfu township" given by the emperor tomorrow.
Brief introduction of ancestral hall
When the ancestral hall was first built, it had three entrances, eight fans and one backyard, with a large scale, 23 meters wide and 43.8 meters deep, covering an area of 1008 square meters; the exterior wall was of brick and stone structure, and the interior was of wooden palace style Dougong building. The temple was destroyed during the reign of emperor Shunzhi of the Qing Dynasty. In the reign of Emperor Kangxi, Houjin and backyard were built. In the reign of Emperor Qianlong, stage pavilions and cloisters were built. In 1947, a two-story building in the middle and an octagonal stage were built. In 1985, Ye's descendants and overseas Chinese paid for large-scale renovation and restored the original appearance. The hall in the temple is exquisitely painted, embossed, and carved. The hall is three rooms wide and five rooms deep, with a wooden frame and a rest on the top of the mountain. Pillars, brackets, doors and windows are exquisitely carved. The five cranes and three couplets in the ancestral hall were all given by the Emperor Wanli. A plaque of "Tian en Cun Wen" - the only original cultural relic preserved in the hall, is still precious. On both sides of the plaque are the plaques of "Huang Ge Shi Chen" and "Shi Xiang Xian" given by the Emperor Wanli. In addition, there is a plaque of "en Rong" given by the emperor Chongzhen to the four generations of his grandfathers and grandsons. There are various plaques and couplets in the ancestral hall, which were written by Fujian calligrapher Chen Tianlin. Although Ye's ancestral hall has been rebuilt, it still retains the architectural style of Ming Dynasty. From its magnificent spirit and exquisite ornaments, you can still feel the prosperity of the past, reflecting the outstanding talent and artistic creativity of the ancient working people.. In particular, the flagpole tablet still standing in front of the ancestral hall seems to witness the glory of the Ye family. The temple was listed as the second batch of county-level key cultural relics protection units on November 23, 1987.
