The origin of the name
Lianxi temple is named after its location. Because Macao is like a lotus, it is called "Lotus Island".
The road from the mainland to Macao is regarded as Lianhuatai. There is a mountain at the end of the platform, which is called Lianhuashan or Lianfeng.
Once upon a time, there was a stream of water in the sun of Lianfeng, which flowed among Xinqiao shops and was called Lianxi. The temple was built on the right bank of the stream, so it was called Lianxi temple.
Built in the reign of Daoguang, the temple worships the gods of Huaguang, Beidi, Caibo and Wenchang. After several times of destruction, repair and expansion, the Xinqiao District, where it is located today, has developed from a vast ocean in the past into one of the prosperous areas of Macao.
Historical evolution
Lianxi temple was built in Daoguang period of Qing Dynasty (1821-1850).
After the wind disaster in 1875, two halls, pokmu and Jinhua, were built on the left and right sides of the temple respectively, with laneways separated. They became five horizontally connected temples with a new appearance, so they were also named Lianxi temple. Now there are only four horizontally connected temples. The temple has no high platform.
Yongle theater was built in front of the temple in 1952.
After several times of destruction, repair and expansion, Xinqiao District, where it is now located, has developed from a vast ocean in the past into one of the bustling areas of Macao.
Structural layout
With a history of more than 200 years, Lianxi temple is located in the center of Xinqiao District, Macao. It was originally built with two horizontal and three deep temples,
In the brick wall, clay sculpture and other decorative aspects, the temple also retains many exquisite works of art. In addition, over the patio between the first and second entrances, a glass canopy was later built to avoid wind and rain for the convenience of tourists.
The venue in front of Lianxi Temple used to be an important venue for performing magic opera in Macao over the years, with a history of more than 100 years.
Worship the gods
Lianxi temple is located in the cable lane, was built in the Qing Dynasty Daoguang years. The temple worships the great emperor Huaguang, the northern emperor, the God of wealth, Wenchang and other Taoist gods.
There are many Bodhisattvas worshipped inside, and the incense is also prosperous.
