The system starts from Hang Seng Bank's head office building, which is connected with the pedestrian overpass system in central, passes through the central market, and ends at Gander road along Golin street, Hollywood Road, Seeley street, morrow Temple cross street and Robinson road. According to Guinness World Records, the system is the world's longest outdoor covered pedestrian escalator. It takes 20 minutes to complete the journey, but most users save time by walking.

The system is free of charge, with about 40000 users per day, managed by Jiading Property Management Co., Ltd.

Historical evolution

The central to mid levels escalator system was built by the Hong Kong government. It was originally designed to facilitate residents in mid levels to travel to the central business district and relieve the busy situation of narrow roads in mid levels. The system cost 240 million Hong Kong dollars to build and was put into operation on October 15, 1993. The annual electricity charge is estimated to be as high as HK $500000. The original design of the project was to build six similar escalator systems. Later, it was found that there was a serious over funding problem during the construction process. In the end, only one escalator was built and the project was not continued.

Take the MTR Hong Kong Island Line and Tsuen Wan line to exit C of central station, go straight along des Voeux Road Central, turn left at Yuzu Bailey street, and walk for about 10 minutes.

The escalator system passes through a number of scenic spots, including SOHO District, which is full of European style, bars and restaurants, central police station, which has a history of 100 years and is listed as a statutory historic site of Hong Kong by the government, and Taichang bakery, a famous traditional bakery loved by former governor Chris Patten.

From Monday to Saturday, 6:00-10:00 is downward (from mid level to central), and 10:00-24:00 is upward.
