Tieshenggou iron smelting site

Tieshenggou iron smelting site is located in Tieshenggou village, Gongyi City, Zhengzhou City, Henan Province. Discovered in 1958 and excavated in 1959, it is one of the most abundant iron smelting sites in the Han Dynasty. From the middle and late Western Han Dynasty to the Eastern Han Dynasty. Here is a comprehensive workshop for smelting pig iron, cast iron, decarburization annealing (softening treatment) and making ironware. Some of the iron wares unearthed have the inscription "Hesan". It is speculated that this is the third iron making workshop under the jurisdiction of Henan County in the Han Dynasty. From the unearthed coal, coal cake and cinder, we can see that coal was used to smelt iron in the Western Han Dynasty, which has attracted great attention in the world and is of great significance to the study of ancient metallurgy in China.

Smelting furnace (blast furnace), forging furnace, steel frying furnace, annealing decarbonization furnace, as well as fan kiln, batching pool, house base, ironware, iron mold, iron material, refractory and building materials were found in the site. There are many ancient iron ore tunnels nearby. The basic links of production are: ironmaking, casting, decarburization and annealing; or ironmaking, ingot casting, steel frying and forging.

Tieshenggou village is surrounded by mountains and rich in mineral resources. To the south is a large-scale iron smelting site of the Western Han Dynasty, which is about 180 meters long from east to west and 120 meters wide from north to south, with a total area of 21600 square meters. Many smelting slag, ore fines, burnt soil and black ash are exposed on the cliffs around the site.

Mining wells and roadways were found in Luohansi, 3km southwest of the smelter, LUOQUAN and Beizhuang in the northwest. From 1958 to 1959, 18 smelting furnaces were excavated within 2000 square meters, including rectangular furnace, circular furnace, row furnace, low temperature furnace, reverberatory furnace, furnace and forging furnace.

There are sponge iron casting pit, iron storage pit, batching pool, etc. 166 pieces of iron production tools, daily utensils and weapons, as well as a large number of pottery and copper coins for daily use were unearthed.
