Brief introduction of battery
Xipaotai site is located at the west end of Yingkou City, on the left bank of the Liaohe River Estuary. It is a modern coastal defense military project built by the Qing Dynasty in Northeast China. It was built in 1882 and completed in 1888, covering an area of about 60000 square meters. It is the only unburned earthen building in Northeast China, and it is one of the coastal Fort sites in China that maintains its original style. In 1894, in the Sino Japanese War of 1894, the Qing army stopped the Japanese invaders and guarded the fort here, which became the historical witness of the Chinese people's resistance to foreign invasion. In 1963, it was designated as the first batch of provincial cultural relics protection units by Liaoning Provincial People's government; in 1997, it was named as the provincial patriotic education demonstration base by Liaoning provincial Party committee; in 2004, it was named as the provincial national defense education demonstration base by Liaoning Provincial National Defense Education Committee. In May 2006, it was designated as the Sixth Batch of key cultural relics protection units by the State Council.
The architectural style of the Western Fort site is unique. The whole platform is in the shape of "convex", which is composed of the moat river, the wall, the fort and other buildings. There are three emplacements, one big and two small. There are walls around them. There are eight concealed gun holes under the walls. The armory and ammunition depot are under the emplacement, and there are three gates in the East. There are more than 200 barracks built in the emplacement, with 52 guns of various sizes.
Since 1991, the Western artillery station has been restored several times, including the restoration of three barracks gates, three barracks buildings, the reproduction of 17 iron cannons, the restoration of large and small artillery stations and walls. In 2005, Yingkou municipal Party committee and government listed the infrastructure construction of xipaotai as one of the 15 practical things of Yingkou City in 2005, and invested more than 10 million yuan to carry out a large-scale restoration and environmental renovation of xipaotai site.
Design process
The fort is made of sand, lime and loess. The whole building includes fort, moat, wall, gate, shadow wall, reservoir, water cave, suspension bridge, armory and barracks. There are three turrets, one big and two small, square in shape. The large turret is in the middle, with a height of 6 meters. It is divided into three layers. A low wall is built around the top of the turret, symmetrical to each other. There are eight concealed gun holes around the wall. Taitung is a 62 meter long ramp with a width of 9-12 meters, opposite the east main gate. The north and the south are 35 meters away from the big fort, each with a small fort, and Taitung has a ramp 24 meters long and 4 meters wide, from which the small fort can go up and down. Around the fort is a wall rammed with soil. It is convex in plane, with a total length of more than 1000 meters and a storage height of 5 meters. On both sides of the fence, sand and lime are added for slope protection. Eight to twelve meters outside the wall is a perimeter moat. On the east side of the wall, a large gate and two small gates are built, with the gate in the middle. At 30 meters outside the gate of the three cities, there is a screen wall, which is made of rammed earth. The screen wall opposite the main gate is particularly tall and heavy.
Research on cultural relics
This fort played a great role in the Sino Japanese War of 1894. Qiao Ganchen, the commander of the Qing army's coastal defense training camp, led the Qing army to use this fort to block the Japanese aggressors and hit the enemy hard. In 1991, in the process of cleaning up the fort, nearly 100 pieces of cultural relics such as iron cannons, shells, foreign gun bullets, iron and stone wall ramming tools, green bricks, pillar bases, dripping water, tiles, porcelain pots, porcelain bowls, porcelain plates, porcelain spoons and luanling, as well as the remains of the original house site, were found.
Spreading history
In 1963, xipaotai site was listed as the first batch of cultural relics protection units in Liaoning Province. Nowadays, it has become an important place for patriotic education.
Despite the baptism of war and more than 100 years of vicissitudes, it is still well preserved. At present, there are exhibition halls and barracks in the site, and a fort is restored. Open all day.
