In the south of Deqin County, Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, on the two cliffs of Lancang River, 80 kilometers away from Shengping Town, there is a beautiful and quiet small mountain village, cizhong. "Ci" means village, and "Zhong" means big, in Tibetan. In the old days, the village was under the jurisdiction of six villages, hence its name. The villagers are mainly Tibetan, Naxi and Han nationalities. Here terraced layer upon layer, shady trees, whenever the spring and autumn season, flowers and fruits all over the mountain, competing. And when summer comes, you will feel cool and refreshing. Cizhong is less than 2000 meters above sea level, so it has a mild climate. It mainly produces rice and is known as the "land of fish and rice". In the middle of cizhong village, there stands a French Catholic Church, which is the provincial cultural relic protection unit - deqinci Zhongtian Cathedral published by the provincial people's Government on December 21, 1987. The original site of the Catholic Church is located in Cigu village, about 15km away from central and southern Cigu. It was built in 1867 (the sixth year of Tongzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty). In 1905 (the 31st year of Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty), the exorcism destroyed Cigu church. After that, the Qing government paid compensation and built the church in cizhong in 1909 and completed it in 1921, which took 12 years and cost a huge amount of manpower, material and financial resources. After the completion of the church, it became the Bishop's Hall of "Yunnan Duoqu". It once had a school and a convent. The Church House has been preserved to this day and was specially allocated by the government for maintenance in 1989. Cizhong church complex is located in the wooded hillside, with green hills on its back and farmhouses in front. The complex is integrated with the natural landscape and has unique characteristics. The whole building takes the church as the center, with a combination of Chinese and Western elements. The main and secondary parts are appropriate, including the gate, front yard, church, backyard, ground kiln, garden, vegetable garden and vineyard. The structure is compact and the scale is spectacular. Along the gate, there is a peripheral block. Around the building and the open space of the room, there is a flower bed with fruit trees, red and green, elegant and chic. From west to East, the church block is a French (Gothic) building with brick and stone structure. The whole building is in the shape of a cross. The height of Ruyi stamp is 1.30 meters. The arched porch is built with stones. The depth is 6 meters and the width is 3 meters. On the porch, a three-story bell tower (watchtower) is built, with a total height of 20 meters. The roof of the building is a pavilion type timber structure with a sharp top. Four inner columns and 12 outer columns are used to support the purlin. Stone railings are built between the inner and outer columns. When you climb the bell tower, you can have a panoramic view of cizhong and the surrounding mountains. The church door is a double door, 2.72 meters high and 0.74 meters wide. The main hall (Auditorium) is 22 meters deep and 12.7 meters wide. Inside the hall, there are two rows of six square stone pillars supporting the roof of the church. There are side rooms for cleaning and changing clothes on both sides. The roof of the church was covered with glazed tiles. In the past, the transportation between cizhong and Jiangdong depended entirely on the cable. Now a steel cable suspension bridge has been built. You can take a bus from Shengping town down the river and get off near kalimi village on South Road. The villagers there know Chinese well. Xingzhi tip: take a bus down the river from Shengping Town, get off near kalimi village on South Road, and then pass by Ma steel cable suspension bridge.
Chez Chung Church
Cizhong church is located in Yanmen Township, Deqin County, Yunnan Province. Founded in 1867, it was originally built in Zigu village under the leadership of French missionaries. In 1892, it was burned by the masses. Later, it pointed to the land as the boundary and forced to collect labor and silver. In 1900, it was moved to cizhong for reconstruction. The church includes the gate, the front yard, the sanctuary, the backyard, the orchard, the vegetable garden, the vineyard, the paddy field and so on. The main building is a combination of Chinese and Western brick and wood structure, with a brick gate, which is similar to the style of archway. It has three floors, with a passageway at the bottom, a pavilion at the top and a cross at the top.
Yunnan diqingci middle church is a Catholic Church, which was built by French missionaries and started construction in 1909
It was completed in 1921, and the magnificent church became the Bishop's Hall of "Yunnan Duoqu".
Human history
Buddhism is an internalized art of life. Most Tibetans in Diqing are devout Buddhists and regard it as a way of life
For the most part, the existence of the church is a miracle.
In the middle of the 18th century, Western Catholics entered Diqing. They established churches and developed believers. They had a very difficult existence in the powerful Tibetan Buddhism. There are few believers, and they are increasingly hated by the people who believe in Tibetan Buddhism. The common people could not tolerate the missionary activities of the Catholic priests, which led to the adonzi case and the Weixi case.
In the case of Vichy in 1905, angry people burned 10 churches along Lancang River and Nujiang River and killed French missionaries Yu Bonan and Pu Deyuan. At that time, the Qing government sent heavy troops to suppress the monks and common people, and the anti foreign religious people resisted for three months. Finally, they were suppressed. As a result, the church obtained compensation and built the cizhong church on the land of cizhong.
In 1921, cizhong church was completed and became the Bishop's sitting Hall of the Catholic "Yunnan Duoqu". It has two branches under its jurisdiction. It has successively run a school and a nunnery. In 1951, the provincial first complete primary school was established here.
architectural style
The style of the church embodies the characteristics of basilica church as a whole, as well as the characteristics of Roman Church. The main building faces east in the West and is of brick and wood structure. Its front is a tall bell tower. Although the upper part of the bell tower is a Chinese pavilion with Chinese cornice and tile roof, the cross marks on the top of its two ends still prove its western identity. After years of shaking in the wind and rain of history, the government paid for the repair and protection to make it return to its original style. Walking into the church, the church was empty, and time seemed to solidify on the mottled wet wall.

geographical position
Cizhong village is located in the legendary shangri la area. The red Lancang River runs past the village. A suspension bridge crosses the river and connects cizhong village with the highway. As the village is located on the hillside with green trees on the opposite bank, you will miss it if you don't pay attention on the way from Deqin to Weixi.
Cizhong is different from other villages in Northwest Yunnan because it has a Catholic Church. The Catholic Church, built by French missionaries, started construction in 1909 and was completed in 1921. The magnificent church became the Bishop's Hall of "Yunnan Duoqu".
Famous scenic spot
Viewed from the air, the Gothic building is in the shape of a cross. The bell tower on the front of the church has three floors, with a typical Chinese traditional cornice on the roof, and a cross stands at the top of the bell tower. There are many couplets in the entrance and inside of the church, most of which are words like "extremely benevolent, extremely loving, extremely good and modest". The image of Jesus in the middle is hung on the left and right respectively: Xuan Ren, Xuan Yi, Yu Zhao, Zheng Da, no beginning and no end, the first is the image of Allah.
During the cultural revolution, the church was not destroyed because it was used as a primary school classroom. The biblical story murals on the wall have fallen off, but the flowers above the bucket arch are still visible, and the plant patterns on the ceiling are as fresh as new. There are slatted seats on the red carpet, and villagers come to worship on weekends. Apart from Catholics, there are also Buddhists and Dongba believers in cizhong, and each has its own place of religious activities.
There are two big trees in the backyard, one is eucalyptus, and the other is laurel. They are all created by missionaries who used European trees to talk about their homesickness. It has been nearly a hundred years now. It takes four people to embrace the tall eucalyptus, which is probably the oldest Eucalyptus in Yunnan.
The big tree is surrounded by large vineyards. In late autumn, the vines are already full of fruit. Cizhong grape is much smaller than the common grape, only the size of nail cap, small and full grain, sweet and sour taste. This French grape named Rose Honey has disappeared in France, but it still grows well in the remote mountains of Yunnan.
The hillside of cizhong is full of grapes, and every family has wine making equipment. The grape planting and wine making techniques learned by the common people from the missionaries have been inherited up to now. The wine brewed in the village every year is packaged and transported to the market by the wine merchants.
Cizhong people are hospitable, and the wine they drink most for dinner is local wine. In the evening, the villagers lit a bonfire in front of the church, enthusiastically pulled the guests away from their long sleeves, wriggled their waists, and started a string dance. The church behind them is dim in the light of dusk, showing a blurred tone.
Until midnight, the grass in the courtyard has been trodden down, and the villagers are still in the mood. We had a good time and stayed in the villager's house that night. In the dark, one foot high and one foot low touch into the light of the farmhouse.
The next morning, when I pushed the window, the church separated by a wall was close in front of me.
Cultural relics protection
On May 25, 2006, cizhong church was approved by the State Council to be listed in the Sixth Batch of national key cultural relics protection units.
