School history
After the Sino Japanese War of 1895, China became a colony of foreign powers. At that time, a group of people with lofty ideals launched reform activities. In 1897, Tan Sitong, Tang Caichang, Ouyang Zhonghu and others set up the "new mathematics school", the first modern school in Hunan to learn western natural science knowledge, by virtue of kuiwenge.
Reasons for establishment
According to the revised regulations of Liuyang Suanshu School: "the original purpose of this school is to cultivate talents, not to seek food for all living beings. Mathematics is the primary foundation of Ge Zhi, that is to say, the cultivation of "extremely subtle attainments, life can not be exhausted." Its main educational ideas can be summarized as follows: the main purpose of the school of mathematics is to cultivate "extremely sophisticated" mathematics professionals. Students are required to be under the age of 30, with three years of schooling, majoring in mathematics, science, science and so on. In addition, there are various "Western books" on social science and natural science. There are newspapers and periodicals such as Shen Bao, Han Bao, Wan Guo Bao, etc. for students to "read foreign history, ancient and modern political affairs, negotiations between China and foreign countries, arithmetic, Gezhi books and newsprint" after class. In terms of teaching methods, Liuyang mathematics school is a mixture of old and new. In addition to adopting the old rules of official and college courses at that time, "every student sends out a diary every month, which is taught by his teacher, practiced by himself, read books from beginning to end, talked by his friends, and what he has learned and invented, as well as what he does besides learning." The new school rules are adopted. The school of mathematics also pays attention to the moral education of the students, but it is different from the feudal ethics education of the old style Academy. Tan Sitong stipulated in the "five articles of association" that "when you study in the library, you can see that you have a great personality, saying" respect your teachers, respect your profession and enjoy the masses ", and the rest of the details are not demanding." This is also the place where Liuyang arithmetic school is obviously different from the old style Academy. In 1898, the reform movement of 1898 failed and the school was forced to close. According to the book "China's science and technology groups", Hunan Liuyang mathematics society should be the first scientific and technological group in modern China. It was established by Tan Sitong, Tang Caichang and his teacher Ouyang Zhonghu. The next year, it was transformed into a mathematics school.
School atmosphere
Although Liuyang Suan Xue Guan was small in scale and only opened for one year, it played an important role in the spread of Hunan new learning and the rise and development of the reform movement. Since its establishment, many governments, prefectures and counties have imitated it. They have added arithmetic to their academic work, and the trend of studying arithmetic is gradually rising. As Tang Caichang said: "Hunan Province is the sprout of China, Liuyang is the sprout of Hunan Province, and arithmetic is the sprout of China.".
Current situation
”In the first half of 2004, Liuyang No.1 Middle School invested more than 400000 yuan in the design of the new arithmetic hall by the Research Office of ancient architecture of Hunan University. Now it has transformed the Tan Sitong Memorial Hall and the school history exhibition hall.
