Jilin Catholic Church
Jilin Catholic Church is located at No.3 Songjiang Road, Jilin City, Jilin Province, near the north end of Jilin bridge and the Songhua River in the south. In the 28th year of Guangxu (1902), renyin bought the land occupied by the Episcopal party and began to prepare for the construction of the Catholic Church. It took 10 years to start construction in 1917.
Historical evolution
In 1898, the priests of the French Catholic Foreign Missionary Association of Paris, LAN Luye and Gu ruoser, came to Jilin City from Shenyang to preach. At that time, the Catholic northeast diocese was divided into North and South dioceses: Ji long, bishop of the South diocese, was in charge of the religious affairs of Fengtian Province (today's Liaoning Province), and the general church was in Fengtian province (today's Shenyang); LAN Luye, bishop of the North diocese, was in charge of Jilin Province and Heilongjiang Province Educational administration, the main hall is located in Jilin City (the original site is located in the east of liangmihang, now the west of Beijing Road Public Security Bureau). In 1902, renyin purchased about 6400 square meters of land occupied by today's main church and began to prepare for the construction of the Catholic Church. Funded by the Foreign Missionary Association of Paris, France, the architectural drawings were designed by the French, and the construction was contracted by engineer mu of GAIPING County, Fengtian province, China. The construction started in the sixth year of the Republic of China (Dingsi, 1917), took nine years, and was completed in the fifteenth year of the Republic of China (Bingyin, 1926).
Introduction to the church
The holy name of Jilin Catholic Church is "the sacred heart of Jesus church", which is a typical Gothic building. The main body is composed of church and bell tower, and the plane is slightly in the shape of "cross". All the buildings are brick and stone arched buildings, without wooden beams or columns. The bricks are made of local special fired green bricks 31 cm long and 25 cm wide. The stones are all made of high-grade granite collected from ashhada, 10 km southeast of Jilin City, and then finely carved into various specifications of patterned stone columns, lintels, stone windowsills, etc. The church yard covers an area of 6449 square meters, with a building area of 800 square meters and a usable area of 536 square meters. It is located at No. 3, Songjiang Middle Road, Jilin City, at the north end of Jilin bridge and adjacent to Songhua River in the south.
Facing south, the church is 33 meters long from north to south, 27 meters wide from east to west, and 22 meters high on ridge. In front of the church, there are three minaret shaped buildings, 24 meters high on both sides, 45 meters high in the middle of the bell tower. There is a 2-meter-high iron cross on the top of the tower. A bronze bell is hung in the building. Every Sunday or Catholic Festival, the church bell sounds several miles away. The church is 22 meters high. The whole hall is supported by 16 large round stone columns with a height of 28 meters and a diameter of 0.5 meters. The top of the church is a cross single brick multi arch structure. The 24 glass windows of the church are all installed with color pattern glass inlaid with lead from France, on which are painted with flowers and biblical stories. In the front of the church, there are three doors, East, middle and West. From the east door, you can get to the second floor along the stone spiral staircase, and then you can get up the wooden stairs to the bell tower. There are five sacrificial platforms in the hall, of which the main platform is carved with chiseled stone, and there are seven gypsum statues with exquisite workmanship and exquisite carving. On February 26, 1999, it was designated as a key cultural relic protection unit in Jilin Province by the provincial government and a national key cultural relic protection unit by the State Council in 2013.
development
Catholicism was introduced into China after Matteo Ricci, a Jesuit missionary, arrived in China in 1508. In 1682 (the 21st year of the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty), he first entered the northeast. From the 18th century to the early 19th century, the spread of Catholicism in China was suppressed. Except for a few areas such as Macao, it was interrupted for a time, and it did not recover until the reign of Daoguang. In 1838, there was an independent diocese in Northeast China, presided over by Bishop Fang ruowang, which lasted for more than 30 years. After 1905, the parish of Jilin was presided over by the Foreign Missionary Association of Paris. The Bishop's office of Jilin diocese was originally located in Jilin City, and the Sacred Heart Church of Jesus is the Episcopal Church. In 1994, the archdiocese was moved to Changchun by father Yan Taijun, the mayor of the diocese. The little Teresa Church in Changchun became the Episcopal Church. Now Jilin Catholic Patriotic Association and Jilin Catholic Senate are located here.
