Development history
Most of the exhibits in the museum come from the 30-year personal collection of the famous shell collector Mr. Zhang Yi. Mr. Zhang Yi has made unremitting efforts for 30 years. While collecting all kinds of rare shells, he has also sorted out the world shell primary color atlas, which has made great contributions to fill the gaps in the research of shellfish culture in China and to spread shellfish related culture.
Mr. Zhang Yi was born in Xiangying Township, Jinzhou District, Liaoning Province in April 1948 and died in December 2011.
Before his death, Mr. Zhang Yi was the chairman, general manager and party secretary of Liaoning Dalian Marine Fishery Group Company (Liaoyu group). He presided over the leadership work of Liaoyu group company for 28 years. During his term of office, he led Liaoyu group to develop China's ocean fishing industry and filled the gap in China's ocean fishing industry. He has won many honors, such as Dalian model worker, Dalian super model worker, Liaoning model worker, Liaoning super model worker, Liaoning meritorious entrepreneur and national excellent entrepreneur, and has won the honorary title of national model worker for two consecutive times. He has successively served as a deputy to the 7th, 8th and 9th Liaoning Provincial People's Congress, and was elected as a deputy to the 10th National People's Congress in March 2003. Mr. Zhang Yi was once a member of the 10th Standing Committee of the CPPCC Liaoning Provincial Committee. He was one of the first experts to enjoy the special allowance of the State Council. In July 2008, Mr. Zhang Yi won the China Navigation lifetime contribution award, becoming the first person in China's fishery field to win the title.
Mr. Zhang Yi has personally written a literary work "men and the sea", which reflects the life theme of the state-owned enterprise boss. The book was published by the writers' Publishing House in 2007.
Mr. Zhang Yi was infatuated with the collection and research of shellfish all his life. While collecting and studying shellfish specimens, he not only met many shellfish scientists at home and abroad, but also became close friends with a large number of amateurs in the field of shellfish collection. He carefully collected more than 10000 species of precious shellfish specimens. No matter the quantity and species of shellfish specimens, or the exquisite specimens, he is not only the first in China, but also famous in the international shellfish collection.
With the support of Dalian municipal Party committee and government, Dalian Shell Museum was officially opened to the public on July 17, 2003, which made Mr. Zhang Yi's rich shellfish collection available to the public and won wide praise from all walks of life. However, due to the limited exhibition area of the former site, a large number of specimens, especially the most distinctive specimens of ammonite fossils in the collection, are difficult to open to the audience. In 2006, Dalian municipal Party committee and government decided to move and expand Dalian Shell Museum. The newly built Dalian Shell Museum has a building area of about 15000 square meters and an exhibition hall area of nearly 9000 square meters. Most of Mr. Zhang Yi's collections are open to the public.
