history
1889
The predecessor of the Taipei Bridge can be traced back to the Qing Dynasty. The construction of the bridge was officially started in 1888.
In August 1889 (the 15th year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu), it was built and completed by Liu Mingchuan, the first governor of Taiwan. It connects sanchongpu (now sanchongpu) with Dadaocheng quay in Taipei.
Originally designed as an iron bridge, due to lack of funds, it had to be replaced by a wooden bridge. The railway track is laid on the bridge, and there are sidewalks on both sides for cars and horses. There is a special iron swing bridge on the north bank, which can be suspended at any time to facilitate the passage of ships. Due to the frequent flooding of wooden bridge piles, regular maintenance is required.
In 1895, Japan took over Taiwan and called it Tanshui bridge, which was repaired in 1896. At the beginning of August 1897 (the 30th year of Meiji in Japan), a typhoon hit Taipei and caused the fracture of Tanshui bridge. Taiwan's governor general's office decided to modify the railway route and go south after Banqiao and Shulin. In 1899 (the 32nd year of Meiji), the old railway was demolished and the new railway and the Tanshui River railway bridge were completed, officially ending the railway history of sanchongpu. At that time, Danshui bridge was an important entrepot port in DALONGDONG and Dadaocheng, and promoted the prosperity of the surrounding underdeveloped areas.
1925
On April 3, 1920 (the ninth year of Dazheng), the opening ceremony of the rebuilt wooden bridge was held, and the repaired wooden bridge was only used by people and vehicles, and the Danshui bridge was renamed Taipei Bridge. On September 4, 1920, the Tamsui River surged, causing damage to the bridge. In February 1921 (the tenth year of Taizheng), the governor's office decided to give up the construction of the wooden bridge and began to rebuild the iron bridge suitable for modern vehicles.
After completion, the opening ceremony was held at 10:00 a.m. on June 18, 1925, Taiwan time. The old name Taibei bridge is still preserved. Taipei Bridge has also become one of the eight scenic spots in Taipei. In 1960, the corrosion problem of Taipei Bridge became more and more serious, so it was decided to demolish the old bridge and rebuild a new one, and the construction started on July 20, 1966.
1969 to 2018
On November 15, 1969, the reconstruction of Taipei Bridge was completed and opened to traffic. It was changed from an iron bridge to a concrete bridge, which is a four lane road. At that time, tolls were required to pass the Taipei Bridge, which was not closed until July 1, 1977. The toll booths on the bridge were not removed until the mid-1990s when the reconstruction project was carried out. In 1987, due to the impact of the Zhongxing bridge breaking incident in 1986 and the increasingly heavy traffic load, the Taiwan Regional Highway Bureau decided to rebuild the main bridge. It planned to change the original four lane road of the main bridge into a six lane road, and build a new side bridge (auxiliary bridge) on both sides of the main bridge. In the future, it was planned to be a locomotive lane and sidewalk. The project started in October 1991 and was completed in mid June 1996. The opening ceremony of the Taipei Bridge was held at 10:00 a.m. on July 16, 1996, Taiwan time, and it was officially opened to traffic at 12:00 p.m. on that day.
