Historical evolution
In March 1950, in order to meet the needs of the development of the situation, according to the decision-making and deployment of the Central Military Commission and the instructions of Marshal Liu Bocheng, the Southwest Military Region decided to set up a Russian language training regiment. The Russian language training regiment consists of two parts: the students of the second military field university and the students of the Russian language brigade of the first northwest military university. The regiment is located in a cave.
In January 1951, the Southwest Military University was transformed into the second advanced Infantry School of the Chinese people's Liberation Army, and the Russian language training regiment was transformed into an attached Russian language brigade under the leadership of the school headquarters.
In June 1952, according to the joint decision of the Government Affairs Council and the Central Military Commission, the Russian language brigade was transferred to the local government as an organic system and was ready to be expanded into the southwest Russian language college.
In May 1953, after one year's transitional preparation by the Russian Department of southwest people's revolutionary University, southwest Russian college was officially established.
In October 1954, the southwest administration of higher education was abolished with the revocation of the Southwest Military and political Commission, and the University was under the leadership of the central Ministry of higher education.
In May 1959, the people's Committee of Sichuan Province decided to expand southwest Russian college into Sichuan foreign languages college. Guo Moruo wrote the name of Sichuan Foreign Languages College in his own hand, setting up four-year Russian major and English major, and successively setting up French and German major.
In May 1963, due to the increase of majors, the expansion of enrollment and the shortage of school buildings, the Higher Education Bureau of Sichuan Province decided to temporarily use the building of Xiema farm agricultural machinery school in Beibei;
In September of the same year, according to the plan of the Ministry of education, Sichuan Province decided to set up Chongqing foreign language school. The foreign languages include Russian and English. According to the notice on opening foreign language schools issued by the Ministry of education, Sichuan foreign language school was designated as one of the 12 universities to accept graduates from foreign language schools.
In March 1965, Sichuan Provincial Department of education and higher education bureau decided that Chongqing foreign language school should be under the leadership and management of Sichuan Institute of foreign languages, renamed as the affiliated foreign language school of Sichuan Institute of foreign languages, and built in Shiqiaopu (in 1966, the school building was completed and the school moved to a new site); in December of the same year, according to the decision of Sichuan Provincial Bureau of higher education, Sichuan foreign language school was built at the site of former Southwest Normal University in wenxingwan, Beibei The school decided to build a teaching building first, which was basically completed at the end of 1966.
In January 1966, all the teachers and students of English Department moved back to wenxingyu campus in Beibei from Xiema farm; in December of the same year, all the headquarters of sanhuashi in North Hot Spring moved to the new site of former Suzhong School of wenxingwan Southwest Normal University in Beibei.
On October 24, 1970, according to the notice on the relocation of Southwest Normal University and Sichuan Institute of foreign languages issued by Sichuan Provincial Revolutionary Committee, the University moved from wenxingwan in Beibei to Southwest College of political science and law, which was originally decided to cancel the tomb of the martyrs in Shapingba.
On November 30, the relocation was completed.
In April 1972, six years after the school stopped recruiting students, it began to resume recruiting students, enrolling 406 workers, peasants and soldiers for the first time nationwide, with a three-year schooling.
On December 22, 1979, with the approval of the Ministry of education, the preparatory department for overseas students of the college was officially established, with German, English and French majors set up one after another for half a year to one year.
On February 6, 1982, four graduate students of grade 1981, majoring in Russian and two in Japanese, were enrolled for the first time;
On March 19 of the same year, it became one of the first universities in China to award bachelor's degree;
On September 30 of the same year, the university degree evaluation committee held a meeting and approved the awarding of 235 graduates of 1981 and 246 graduates of 1982 with Bachelor of Arts degree. This is the first time since 1949 that a degree certificate has been granted.
On August 11, 1986, the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council issued a notice that the major of English language and literature and Russian language and literature of the University was granted the master's degree. He was also recommended as an exam free postgraduate.
In 1997, Chongqing broke away from Sichuan Province and became a municipality directly under the central government.
In December 2006, the University was added as a doctor awarding unit of Chongqing project construction.
In January 2009, through the Ministry of education undergraduate teaching level evaluation, the conclusion is "excellent".
On April 14, 2013, the Ministry of Education approved the university to be renamed Sichuan Foreign Studies University.
On May 12, 2020, the University Alliance of Chengdu Chongqing double city economic circle was jointly established with 20 universities including Sichuan University.
