Architecture
Wanchai police station is a typical building in the British colony. The building is four stories high. The architectural design is mainly streamlined, with traditional stoves, stairs, doors and windows. It still retains the architectural characteristics of the 1930s. Wan Chai police station is the oldest police station still in operation on Hong Kong Island.
Future development
The government plans to build new central district headquarters and central district police stations (see central district headquarters and central police station) on central Harbour Road in Sheung Wan (i.e. around the waterfront police station) and merge them with the waterfront police district. The project costs HK $243.2 million and is expected to be completed in November 2009. After the central headquarters and the central district police station move out of the police administration building, the Wan Chai district headquarters and the Wan Chai District police station, which were originally located in Wan Chai police station, will move in. In 1999, the Home Affairs Bureau said that the government would not demolish the Wan Chai police station and planned to transform it into a special restaurant. The adjacent married police dormitory would be used for commercial purposes. The Development Bureau said that the land use of Wanchai police station has not been finalized yet. At the 15th meeting of the second session of the Wan Chai District Council on 21 March 2006, a motion was moved by a district council member to retain the Wan Chai police station and passed.
At present, Wan Chai police station has been rated as a class III historical building in Hong Kong. Some members of the Antiquities Advisory Committee said that it is necessary to re rate Wan Chai police station.
