brief introduction
Hong Kong Central Library
It is a 12 storey building, covering an area of 9400 square meters and a total floor area of 33800 square meters. By 2011, it had a collection of more than 2.3 million books (12.11 million books in the public library system of Hong Kong), making it the largest public library in Hong Kong. The construction cost of the library is as high as HK $690 million, which has been criticized by members of the Finance Committee of the Legislative Council for its high construction cost. In particular, the design of the decorative column at the bottom of Rome, which was added at the top of the library by the Preparatory Department afterwards, has been accused of wasting public money. In May 2001, the opening ceremony of the Hong Kong Central Library was presided over by Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa. The Hong Kong Central Library, located at 66 Causeway Road, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong Island, adjacent to Victoria Park in the north, opened on May 17, 2001, is the largest public library in Hong Kong, China, managed by the leisure and Cultural Services Department. It has replaced the Hong Kong City Hall Library as the main library and has become the central system and information center of all public libraries in Hong Kong.
Evolution characteristics
The poster of the public consultation meeting of the Hong Kong Central Library held by the Urban Council in 1996 shows the original design of the top of the building. In the 1990s, the Urban Council decided to build a new Central Library as the flagship Library of Hong Kong. The preparatory plan of the Hong Kong Central Library came into being. Before the completion of the Hong Kong Central Library, there were five Central libraries in Hong Kong: Hong Kong City Hall Library, Kowloon Central Library, Sha Tin Central Library, Tsuen Wan Central Library and Tuen Mun central library.
The location of the Hong Kong Central Library used to be the only open-air volleyball court on Hong Kong Island. As more and more Indonesian domestic helpers gather around Causeway Bay on Sunday, it has become a place for them to gather and play. Later, the government decided to build a central library here, which once caused controversy among local people, worrying that foreign domestic helpers would lack meeting places.
The design of the building has also caused controversy. In 1997, the then chairman of the Urban Council, Liang Dingbang, and the director of urban services, Ms. Chung, publicly criticized the design of the central library. Although the high-tech design proposed by Mr. Chung was rejected because the project had already started, the architectural design of imitating the classical style was ridiculed by Urban Council members as a western style villa in mainland China. The construction cost of the central library is as high as HK $690 million, which has been criticized by members of the Finance Committee of the Legislative Council. The Preparatory Department has changed the original design of the top of the building and added Roman style decorative columns, which is a waste of public money.
The geometric patterns of circles, squares and triangles can be seen everywhere inside and outside the Central Library of Hong Kong. They have the metaphors of "round sky, round place" and "knowledge accumulated into a tower". As the original design is the Central Library of the Urban Council, the logo of the Urban Council can be seen in the lift door and the handrail of the main door. Although the Urban Council of Hong Kong has been dissolved, the logo itself is also an abstract design of bauhinia in Hong Kong.
On May 17, 2001, the Hong Kong Central Library was opened by the former chief executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa, and officially opened on May 18.
