Tiebu Sika Deer Nature Reserve is home to the rare wild animal Tiebu sika deer (a new subspecies of sika deer, also known as Sichuan sika deer). Tiebu Sika Deer Nature Reserve has pleasant climate, rich vegetation and special geographical location, which provides an ideal "paradise" for wildlife habitat.

They were able to survive the hunting and breed here for a long time, and also benefited from the religious beliefs of the local people. According to legend, Dane mountain, located in the habitat of sika deer, is a powerful mountain god with clear rewards and punishments. The mountain god protects the whole Chonger tribe. Sika deer is a kind of deer raised by the mountain god. No one is allowed to hurt it. Otherwise, the mountain god will be angered, and the whole tribe will suffer disaster. Hail will cause crops to fail, cattle and sheep will die, and people will get sick. Therefore, since ancient times, no one has been hunting and allowed to live and reproduce freely.

Before the people's reform, Tiebu area was almost isolated from the world due to the traffic barrier, less business contacts and self-sufficiency. No one paid attention to the natural situation of sika deer. Outsiders don't know that there are national first-class protected animals in the mountain.

In 1964, when Sichuan Institute of traditional Chinese medicine investigated the medicinal animal resources in Northwest Sichuan, five Sika Deer specimens were collected from June to July in tiebuchongerlazigou. After the research of experts from Sichuan Institute of traditional Chinese medicine and Sichuan epidemic prevention station, it was found that this is a new subspecies of sika deer, and it was named Sichuan sika deer. The discovery of sika deer, a new wild population resource, has aroused great attention of the scientific community and relevant government departments. In order to protect this precious population resource, the people's Committee of Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture zoned the sika deer concentrated distribution in the three townships of Lenglie, Chonger and re'er in Tiebu District of Ruoergai County as a nature reserve in 1956, named Tiebu nature reserve, with a total area of more than 20000 hectares. Later, it was cancelled for some reason, until 1974, with the consent of the provincial Revolutionary Committee, Tiebu Nature Reserve was restored.

For more than 20 years, the national, provincial and state guidelines and policies on the protection of rare wild animals have been seriously publicized and implemented in the reserve, and effective measures have been taken to prohibit hunting, logging, burning wasteland and other activities that damage the natural environment of sika deer habitat. The population of sika deer in the area is expanding, and according to incomplete statistics, it has developed to thousands. The natural vegetation area of Tiebu Sika Deer Nature reserve accounts for about 80% of the total area, and the forest coverage rate is 53%. In addition to sika deer, there are 175 species of vertebrates in the reserve, such as Schizothorax sinensis, blue eared pheasant, leopard cat, forest musk deer and impala.
