School background
In 1952, following the example of the former Soviet Union, China adjusted the colleges and departments of colleges and universities nationwide, planned to move a number of coastal and Eastern universities to the central and western regions, and planned to move Shandong University to Zhengzhou to establish a new Henan University. Due to various reasons, Shandong University failed to settle in Zhengzhou, but moved back to Jinan.
Considering the current situation of higher education in Henan Province, the Ministry of Education decided in 1954 that Shandong University, Peking University, Jilin University, Northeast University and other institutions should be responsible for and provide teachers to set up a new university in Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan Province, which is the beginning of Zhengzhou University.

Zhengzhou University
On September 15, 1954, more than 1000 freshmen and staff of Zhengzhou University, provincial and municipal leaders of the party, government and army, representatives of the Ministry of higher education and leaders of brother universities celebrated the birth of Zhengzhou University.
In February 1956, the Central University Planning Conference officially determined that the new university in Zhengzhou was named "Zhengzhou University", with three departments of mathematics, physics and chemistry. The Preparatory Committee was composed of Ji Wenfu, member of the academic department of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Gong Yiqun and Wang Yue, deputy directors.
In April 1956, Professor Liu Chuan, general secretary and director of the Department of chemistry of Shandong University, went to Zhengzhou for an investigation. With the support of the provincial and municipal governments, 922 mu of land was allocated to Caiwang, jiaojiamen, bee Zhang and Dui villages in the construction area of Zhengzhou as the first phase of the construction of Zhengzhou University. A year later, the office and teaching building of the Department of mathematics, physics and chemistry on the west side of University Road and the living area on the east side of university road were completed.
In August 1956, with the approval of the Ministry of education, Zhengzhou University, as a university directly under the Ministry of education, enrolled students from the third Department of mathematics, physics and chemistry in the whole country. Mr. Guo Moruo, former president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, inscribed the name of the University.
In 1958, at the request of the provincial government, Zhengzhou University directly under the Ministry of education was transferred to Henan Province. After it was transferred to Henan Province, it began to carry out continuous adjustment of colleges and departments.
In 1958, three departments of politics, history and Chinese were set up.
In 1959, with the support of Tianjin University, Dalian Institute of technology and Wuhan University, Zhengzhou University established four departments of civil engineering, machinery, water conservancy and electrical engineering.
In 1960, the Department of foreign languages was established.
In 1961, the former Zhengzhou normal university was merged into Zhengzhou normal university, which can be traced back to the secondary education part of Henan University and Henan superior normal school (later renamed Kaifeng normal school) established by the former guerrilla government office in qianyingmen of Kaifeng in 1902.
In 1962, Henan Institute of Applied Physics was incorporated into Zhengzhou University, and the Department of geography of Zhengzhou University was incorporated into Kaifeng Normal University.
In 1963, based on the four departments of civil engineering, water conservancy, machinery and electrical engineering of Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou Institute of technology was established.
In 1991, Huanghe University was incorporated into the University.
In 1992, Henan College of physical education was incorporated into the University.
In 1996, Zhengzhou University passed the preliminary examination of the national "211 Project" department. In June of the same year, it was officially included in the national "211 Project" project to carry out key construction.
In 1999, it was selected into the first batch of national college students' cultural quality education bases.
Zhengzhou University of Technology
In 1963, based on the four departments of civil engineering, water conservancy, machinery and electrical engineering of Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou Institute of technology, a key university directly under the Ministry of chemical industry, was established by merging with Henan Institute of chemical technology. It was suspended for six years during the cultural revolution.
In 1973, the Department of grain and oil industry of Henan Agricultural University (formerly Zhengzhou grain College) was incorporated into Zhengzhou Institute of technology.
In 1978, the Department of grain and oil industry of Zhengzhou Institute of technology was separated out and returned to Zhengzhou Institute of grain. Now it has developed into Henan University of technology.
In April 1996, it was renamed Zhengzhou University of technology.
Henan Medical Sciences University
Henan Medical University can be traced back to 1928, when it was founded as the Fifth National Sun Yat sen University.
In October 1952, the national departments were adjusted. They were separated from Henan University and renamed as Henan Medical College, which is subordinate to the central Ministry of health. It is one of the first batch of 27 authorized units of doctor's degree in China.
In the autumn of 1958, the Medical College of Henan University and its First Affiliated Hospital moved to the new site of Zhengzhou. During this period, it received the fifth rehabilitation hospital of Zhengzhou and was renamed the Second Affiliated Hospital. Later, it established a children's Hospital at its former site, which was cancelled in 1962.
In July 1962, Luoyang Medical College was abolished and some teachers and students were incorporated.
In 1966, the "Cultural Revolution" began, the school suffered serious losses and damage, stopped enrollment for six years.
In 1978, the Department of preventive medicine was established.
In 1981, it became one of the first teaching and research institutions with the right to confer doctorate and master's degrees.
In 1983, the Department of Pediatrics was established.
In 1984, it was named Henan Medical University.
In 1985, the Department of Stomatology was established.
In 1988, the Department of medical laboratory and health management were established.

Merger and reorganization
On July 10, 2000, the former Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou University of technology and Henan Medical University merged to form a new Zhengzhou University. Li Keqiang, then governor of Henan Province, attended the meeting and announced the establishment of the new Zhengzhou University.
On February 27, 2004, Zhou Ji, Minister of education, and Li Chengyu, governor of Henan Province, signed the agreement on the joint construction of Zhengzhou University by the Ministry of education and Henan Provincial People's government. Zhengzhou University officially became the key university jointly constructed by the Ministry of education and Henan Provincial People's Government, and thus became the first University jointly constructed by the Ministry of education in China.
On May 30, 2007, he successfully passed the undergraduate evaluation of the Ministry of education and became an "excellent" University.
In April 2010, the University was rated as "National Graduate Employment typical experience university" by the Ministry of education. In June, it was selected into the first batch of "excellent engineer education and training plan" universities of the Ministry of education.
In 2011, Zhengzhou University became one of the 24 universities expanded by the joint conference of presidents of China's graduate schools, and formally established the graduate school. In the next year, 15% of the graduate students were recommended for master's degree without examination.
In November 2012, Zhengzhou University was selected into the national "comprehensive strength improvement project of universities in central and Western China"; in the same month, Zhengzhou University was selected into the first batch of national "excellent legal personnel education and training plan" and the first batch of "excellent doctor education and training plan".
In May 2013, it was selected as one of the first batch of Pilot Universities for the reform of training mode of clinical medicine master degree. In July, Zhengzhou University was selected as the first demonstration base for international students from the Ministry of education.
In February 2015, it won the title of the fourth "national civilized unit".
On October 10, 2016, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the founding of Zhengzhou University and the 53rd Anniversary of the death of Ji Wenfu, Zhengzhou University held the unveiling ceremony of the statue of Ji Wenfu, the first president of Zhengzhou University.
In January 2017, it was recognized by the Ministry of education as "the first batch of national demonstration universities to deepen innovation and entrepreneurship education reform". In September, it was selected into the list of national "double first-class" universities and entered the ranks of world-class universities. In November, the school was awarded the first national civilized campus honorary title.
In February 2018, Zhengzhou University was upgraded from "universities jointly built by the Ministry of education" to the first batch of "universities jointly built by the Ministry of education" and included in the list of universities directly under the Ministry of education of the people's Republic of China. In March, the University was awarded the first batch of "new engineering" research and practice projects by the Ministry of education.
In July 2018, Zhengzhou University signed a contract with the Cotton Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences to jointly build the Agricultural College of Zhengzhou University; in the same month, the University was rated as "national innovation and entrepreneurship typical experience university" by the Ministry of education. In August, Zhengzhou University was selected for the first time in the national "discipline innovation and talent introduction plan for colleges and universities" (namely "111 plan"). In November, it was selected as the first batch of excellent traditional Chinese culture inheritance bases of the Ministry of education.
On July 13, 2019, Henan Provincial People's hospital was officially listed as the people's Hospital of Zhengzhou University and included in the affiliated hospital system of Zhengzhou University.
