Nanyang start up
In 1895, the failure of the Sino Japanese War and the signing of the Treaty of Shimonoseki put the Chinese nation in danger. Sheng Xuanhuai, the Minister of Westernization school, put forward the idea that "the first step to self-improvement is to reserve talents, and those who reserve talents must start school first" and the proposal of reforming the old educational institutions.
In 1896, Sheng Xuanhuai once again proposed to the Qing government a plan for self-improvement, accompanied by "please set up a school", and raised funds in Shanghai to build a new school, which was called "Nanyang public school". On January 26, 1897, the memorial was approved by the Qing government, and Nanyang public school was officially founded. Sheng Xuanhuai personally served as the governor of the school, and he Sikun served as the prime minister.
Nanyang public school was divided into four colleges: normal college, foreign college, middle college and upper college. It formed a complete new education system with the special class, political class, business class and Dongwen school.

Nanyang public school was transferred to the Ministry of Commerce in 1905 and renamed the higher Industrial School of the Ministry of Commerce; in 1906, it was transferred to the Ministry of Posts and telecommunications. In 1911, the revolution of 1911 broke out, and the school was renamed Nanyang University; after the founding of the Republic of China in 1912, it was under the management of the Ministry of communications, and then it was renamed as Shanghai Industrial School of the Ministry of communications. In this process, president Tang Wenzhi added railway specialty, electrical specialty and navigation specialty, and the school changed from cultivating business and industrial talents to cultivating engineering and technical talents.
Name Jiaotong University
In August 1920, ye gongchuo became the chief traffic officer. In December of the same year, ye merged Shanghai Industrial school, Tangshan Industrial school, Beijing Railway Management School and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications under the Ministry of communications, and renamed it Jiaotong University. This is the first Industrial Research Institute in China. It has four departments of physics, chemistry, machinery and materials. The next year, the two departments of materials and machinery were merged and another department of electrical machinery was set up.
In November 1928, the school was transferred to the Ministry of railways, and the colleges of Jiaotong University in Shanghai, Tangshan and Beiping were merged, which were collectively referred to as Jiaotong University of the Ministry of railways. War beacon
On November 12, 1937, the Japanese army occupied Shanghai, and the Jiaotong University School was occupied by Japanese invaders. They had to try every means to maintain classes in the French concession. In 1940, the branch of Jiaotong University was established in Xiaolongkan, Chongqing due to the urgent need for engineering talents in the war of resistance against Japanese aggression and construction in the rear area. Later, it gradually expanded and developed, and was upgraded to the headquarters of national Jiaotong University in Jiulongpo, Chongqing in August 1942. In order to resist foreign aggression, many students have been fighting in the battlefield. In 1943, the Institute of telecommunications of Jiaotong University was established, and it was the unit with the largest number of Engineering Masters in China before liberation. After the victory of the Anti Japanese war in 1945, the teachers and students of Chongqing and Shanghai schools of Jiaotong University were actively demobilized and joined up to build the school. On the eve of liberation, teachers and students actively participated in the democratic revolution and liberation struggle, and the school was known as the "bastion of democracy". After the liberation of Shanghai in 1949, the Shanghai Municipal military control commission of the Chinese people's Liberation Army decided to take over Jiaotong University First, and successively issued two "No. 1 orders" to Jiaotong University, so as to stabilize the situation of Shanghai's educational circles.
Adjustment of colleges and departments

From the second half of 1949 to 1956, Jiaotong University experienced many adjustments, which made great changes in its traditional pattern of running schools. Jiaotong University has 17 departments in its original three colleges, with the exception of mechanical, electrical and shipbuilding disciplines strengthened by Tongji University, Datong University and other relevant colleges and departments in Shanghai and surrounding areas. Almost all other colleges and departments have been transferred out, and the university has been adjusted into a multidisciplinary engineering university with seven departments in three categories of mechanical, electrical and shipbuilding. A large number of departments and subjects adjusted by Jiaotong University, together with strong teachers and equipment, have become the backbone of many brother universities and made important contributions to the development of higher education in China.
Dashu moved to the West
In 1955, for the needs of socialist construction and national defense construction, the Party Central Committee and the State Council decided to move Jiaotong University from Shanghai to Xi'an. Since 1956, the teachers and students of Jiaotong University have closely combined the national requirements with the fate of the school and personal development, and actively carried out the work of school relocation under the leadership of President Peng Kang. In 1957, as the international situation tended to ease, according to the actual situation of Jiaotong University and the construction needs of Shanghai and Xi'an, the State Council decided to move most of the faculty and students, archives, books and instruments of Jiaotong University to Xi'an as the Xi'an part of Jiaotong University; a small part stayed in Shanghai and merged with the former Shanghai Shipbuilding Institute and Nanyang Institute of technology to serve as the transportation center The Shanghai part of the University, two parts for a school, unified leadership.
In March 1959, Xi'an and Shanghai parts of Jiaotong University were listed as one of the national key universities.
