Shipi Lane

Shipi lane is a lane formed between the two houses of the descendants of the Wang family. The ground is paved with 168 stone slabs. The total length is 68 meters, and the narrowest part is only 0.8 meters. Under the stone slab road in the lane is a sewer which can keep the whole Lane from ponding in rainy days. The stone slab as thin as skin is used as the surface of the sewer, so it is called Shipi lane. The red lanterns in the lane show the flavor of Jiangnan. Interestingly, if there are two fat people in the intersection, it may not be easy to pass even if you wipe the wall and stick your belly.

Before the Ming Dynasty, there were four big families in the ancient town: Tang, Wang, Zhao and Lu. After the Ming Dynasty, there were many big families such as Ni, Jiang, Zhu, bu and Lu. There are 122 lanes of different lengths in the town, of which five are more than 100 meters long. The most distinctive open-air lane is called Shipi lane.

Shipi lane is located in Xiaxi street of Xitang Town, and the west head of Zhongfu hall is an open-air Lane sandwiched between two houses. It was built in the late Ming Dynasty and the early Qing Dynasty. Among the 122 lanes in Xitang Town, Shipi lane is the narrowest, only 1 meter wide, and the narrowest part of the lane is only 0.8 meters long, with a total length of 68 meters. The two terraced Gables on the left and right sides of Shipi lane are 6-10 meters high, which still retains the ancient and unique style.

This long stone lane is the longest Lane in Xitang. It's deep and narrow. The stone is as thin as skin, so it's called Shipi Nong. I like the roads paved with bluestone slabs. People who want to have been to Xitang will like these bluestone roads. In the morning or in the sunset, they walk through the long lane, drag the floor with their long skirts, and their swaying figures make clear footsteps on the bluestone slabs. Look at the Shipi lane and imagine the spring and Autumn period when the courtyard was deeply locked.
