The origin of the name
The ancient temple was first built in the Jin Dynasty. Emperor Wen of the Jin Dynasty granted 36 nunneries to Qingcheng. The ancient temple is the largest one of them, formerly known as Changle nunnery. Emperor Wen of the Sui Dynasty granted Guangda Yanming plaque. It was destroyed by Emperor Wuzong of the Tang Dynasty. In the fifth year of Xiantong of emperor Yizong of the Tang Dynasty (864 AD), it was rebuilt by monk Shansi and renamed Changle temple. It was named Cuiwei temple in Song Dynasty. During the Yongle period of Ming Dynasty, in order to avoid the taboo of the word "Yue", Zhu chunzo, king of Shu, asked him to grant the temple the name of "Guangyan Temple", so it is also called Guangyan temple. At that time, there were more than 1000 monks, who could be regarded as Buddhas and sentient beings. In the Qing Dynasty, Emperor Kangxi specially inscribed the plaque of "Guangyan Temple", which was the banner hanging on the gate. The temple has been damaged several times and rebuilt many times in the past dynasties. Because the temple is so old, later generations commonly call it an ancient temple, which has been changed for a long time. On the contrary, the name of Guangyan temple is rarely mentioned.
