At present, there are more than 1000 species of woody plants and more than 800 horticultural varieties, among which there are 67 species of first, second and third class protected plants.
Since the establishment of Chengdu botanical garden for more than 20 years, more than 50 scientific research projects have been completed, among which the research on hibiscus and Podocarpus has reached the international and domestic leading level. There are more standardized science popularization facilities, Chengdu youth Plant Science Museum, science popularization plant exhibition hall. Outstanding achievements have been made in landscape plants, flower cultivation, breeding and pest control, plant germplasm gene transfer protection, plant introduction and domestication, especially in the research and application of Hibiscus. There are 72 kinds of high-quality varieties in Chengdu, Beijing, Hangzhou, Nanjing and other cities in the province have been widely used in garden construction, which has contributed to improving the urban environment. There are many Botanical Gardens: Hibiscus garden, cherry garden, tea garden, wintersweet garden, magnolia garden, Begonia Garden, pine and cypress garden, pear garden, osmanthus garden, plum garden, Xilin garden and European style sparse forest big lawn. The park has towering trees, dense shade, colorful flowers, birds, clear lakes, winding paths, fresh air and elegant environment. When the spring breeze blows, the sound of Lin Tao still rings in my ears, birds pass by, and the sound of nature sounds like harmony; on the grass, children are rolling, playing and flying kites, and their bright smiles are like blooming flowers.
The landscape forest area of Chengdu botanical garden adopts the construction mode with the vegetation of Western Sichuan as its characteristics, and takes the dominant species and zonal vegetation which can reflect the characteristics of the natural environment - the low mountain evergreen broad-leaved forest with partial humidity as the main group of landscape forest, such as Magnoliaceae, Aceraceae, rhododendraceae, etc. Now the Masson Pine and oak trees in the park are more than 10 meters high, and the canopy density is almost 100%. Cinnamomum camphora, Ginkgo biloba, red bean, Camptotheca acuminata, mulberry and jasmine have been cultivated for more than 20 years in the scenic forest area. The forest has distinct layers, orderly vertical and horizontal, and each has its own characteristics. It provides an ideal garden for scientific research institutions and colleges to engage in scientific research, teaching and popular science activities.
In order to give full play to the functions of the botanical garden in improving the quality of urban ecological environment, maintaining ecological balance and protecting plant diversity, Chengdu botanical garden has been guiding the construction of the botanical garden based on the theory of plant ecological science. With plants as the main body, they have established a stable artificial plant community with multi-level, multi structure and multi-function, so as to make sustainable use of resources. The botanical garden covers an area of more than 680 mu. Since the merger of the municipal garden Research Institute and the botanical garden in 1987, according to the plant species, 12 special ornamental gardens have been built, including magnolia, plum blossom, cherry blossom, Begonia, pear blossom, cypress, camellia, Osmanthus fragrans, Nanzhu, liana, Furong and Chimonanthus praecox. It has become a concentrated exhibition place of traditional garden flowers at home and abroad and characteristic plants in Sichuan. In order to strengthen the integration of landscape function and ecological function of special parks, in the past two years, they have also carried out comprehensive geomorphic transformation and plant adjustment of special parks and scenic forest areas, covering an area of more than 530 mu, newly built lawn of nearly 50 mu and newly planted trees and shrubs of more than 30000.
In order to better introduce and domesticate the plants, they introduced the wild plant resources in Western Sichuan, and gradually reduced the altitude to adapt to the local climate domestication. They also studied the topics of "rare and endangered plants", "five species of Michelia in Magnoliaceae" and "Jinfoshan plants". 48 species belonging to 7 genera were introduced and preserved in Magnoliaceae. Among them, 15 species have blossomed, most of which are evergreen trees with large fragrant flowers and high ornamental value, ranking the first in the province. In addition, ornamental plants such as Melaleuca pendulata, Laurus fortunei, Photinia serulosa and Acer rubrum, which have been successfully introduced and domesticated, can be used as excellent tree species for urban greening or garden layout.
Over the years, according to the zonal distribution of plants, Chengdu botanical garden has changed the forestry production of cultivating a few afforestation tree species into domestication and cultivation of introducing rare and native plants inside and outside the province, providing tree species resources and seedlings for urban landscaping in the city. More than 1500 species of woody plants have been introduced from Qingcheng Mountain, Emei Mountain, Heilongtan, Leibo County, Jinfo Mountain and Jinyun Mountain in Chongqing and other places outside the province. Among them, there are 67 species of first, second and third class protected plants, including Cunninghamia lanceolata, Cupressaceae, Magnoliaceae, Lauraceae and Aceraceae. There are species of Cinnamomum tianzhugui, Michelia Emei, Eucommia ulmoides, Zhennan and so on. At the same time, more than 200 kinds of common representative garden trees are hung with signs to indicate the plant species name, Latin scientific name, family and genus, origin distribution and morphological characteristics, so that tourists can understand the status of this plant in the plant classification system, and tell people its growing region and climate environment. Visitors not only enjoy the natural beauty, but also acquire useful popular science knowledge.
In 1990, it was rated as one of the eight new sceneries of Chengdu by the municipal government, and named "green sea treasure".
In 1999, it was awarded the first batch of provincial popular science education bases by the Propaganda Department of Sichuan provincial Party committee, Sichuan Provincial Science and Technology Commission and Sichuan Provincial Association for science and technology.
In December 2001, it was awarded the new name plate of "provincial popular science education base".
In 2014, it won the title of excellent national science popularization education base in 2014.
