The museum was founded in 1950. The original site of the museum is at the foot of Fenghuang mountain. A new museum was built in wangjiaping in 1968 and officially opened to the public in 1973. The seven characters of "Yan'an revolutionary memorial" above the main entrance of the exhibition hall are written by Guo Moruo. With a construction area of 5000 square meters and an exhibition area of 3240 square meters, the new museum is a memorial hall displaying revolutionary cultural relics and reflecting the history of revolutionary struggle in Yan'an area under the leadership of the Communist Party of China. It mainly publicizes the glorious history of Chinese revolution led by the CPC Central Committee in Yan'an and the Shaanxi Gansu Ningxia border region from October 1935 to March 1948.

Yan'an Revolutionary Memorial Hall
Yan'an revolutionary memorial hall is located on the East Bank of Yanhe River in the northwest of Baota District, Yan'an City, Shaanxi Province, 1km away from the city. It is a national AAAAA scenic spot.
Yan'an revolutionary memorial hall was built in January 1950. It was originally located in Nanguan communication office. It is one of the earliest revolutionary memorial halls established after the founding of the people's Republic of China. In 1954, he moved to the former site of the CPC Central Committee in Yangjialing and named it "Yan'an Museum". In 1955, he moved to the former revolutionary site of Fenghuang Mountain in the city, which was renamed "Yan'an revolutionary memorial hall". In June 1973, he moved to the current site of wangjiaping. There is a red plaque hanging above the main entrance of the exhibition hall, on which Guo Moruo inscribed the name of the museum when he visited Yanzhou in 1971.
There are more than 35000 cultural relics, 5500 historical photos and 12000 books and materials in the collection. Among them, there are more than 1700 first-class and second-class cultural relics, and more than 100 newspapers and magazines published during the Yan'an period.
In March 2008, it was rated as a national first-class Museum by the State Administration of cultural relics.
In December 2016, Yan'an revolutionary memorial hall was listed in the list of national Red Tourism classic scenic spots.
In December 2017, it was selected into the list of the first batch of national primary and secondary school students' research and practice education bases and camps of the Ministry of education.

The square in front of the memorial hall covers an area of 27000 square meters. In the middle of the square stands the bronze statue of Mao Zedong. Around the flower bed planted pine, cypress, peony, rose, Robinia pseudoacacia and other valuable flowers and plants. There are more than 7000 square meters of lawn in front of the flower bed, and cypress trees on both sides, which form the eight characters of "Yan'an spirit, shine forever".

The exhibition hall is composed of six exhibition halls with the same area. The exhibition hall is tall and spacious with good daylighting performance.

There are three big flower beds in front of the exhibition hall, and the words "seeking truth from facts" made of flowers and plants are dazzling. A large number of valuable revolutionary cultural relics are displayed in the exhibition hall, which reproduces the brilliant achievements of Mao Zedong, Liu Shaoqi, Zhou Enlai, Zhu De and others in Yan'an.
More than 1260 revolutionary historical relics and 670 historical photos are on display. These materials provide precious materials for us to study Chinese revolutionary history, study the revolutionary history of Shaanxi Gansu Ningxia border region, and carry out revolutionary tradition education. The staff of the memorial hall perform dance for tourists in the performance hall, and the audience can listen to the revolutionary traditional songs and Northern Shaanxi folk songs popular in Yan'an free of charge.
Bronze statue of Mao Zedong
The bronze statue of Mao Zedong is 5 meters high, and the base is 3.15 meters high, with a total height of 8.15 meters. On the base is engraved with six Golden characters "Mao Zedong in Yan'an" inscribed by Jiang Zemin.
The bronze statue, designed by the famous sculptor Cheng Yunxian, was unveiled on January 13, 1997 in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the CPC Central Committee and Mao Zedong's entry into Yan'an.

The 400 meter long exhibition hall features more than 1000 historical photos and 800 revolutionary cultural relics. The newly-built Yan'an revolutionary memorial hall is located in the north and faces the south. The main building is symmetrical with the rainbow bridge on the Yan River, which is 222 m long from east to west and 119 m deep from north to south.
