Wenxing Pavilion, commonly known as bell tower and square tower, is located between Fengmen and xiangmen in the east of Suzhou ancient city. It was first built in 1541, the 20th year of Jiajing reign of Ming Dynasty. The existing pavilion was rebuilt in 1752, the 17th year of Qianlong reign of Qing Dynasty, and rebuilt in Tongzhi reign. The attic has four floors. It is 6.5 meters high and 14.4 meters wide at the bottom, gradually decreasing upward. In the south, there are stone steps in the shape of eight characters, which can be picked up from both sides. It is covered with four corners with sharp top, wing angle warping and gourd top. It is about 28 meters high. The plane of the pavilion is square, and the four sides of each floor are arched. There is no waist eaves between the floors. The bottom layer is 8.6 meters wide. From bottom to top, there are not obvious scores layer by layer, forming a layered and straight contour line. The Guixiang hall in Tongzhi period of Qing Dynasty still exists in the south of the pavilion. In 1982, it was listed as a cultural relic protection unit in Suzhou. In 2002, Wenxing Pavilion in Suzhou and the former site of Soochow University were listed as cultural relic protection units in Jiangsu Province.

history
In 1541, the school of Changzhou County moved to the former site of Funing temple in the east of the city. From the 17th year of Wanli (1589 to the 25th year), Wenxing pavilion was built in the former site of Zhongge of dongchan temple in the southeast of Xianxue. It was attached to Xianxue and confronted with the two towers in the southwest of Xianxue, so as to "make up for the lack of success and strengthen the momentum of Xuegong". After 40 years of reconstruction, it moved a little southward, which is where it is now. Chongzhen six years (1633) repair. The stone platform foundation and the brick Pavilion at the bottom are still relics of the Ming Dynasty. "In the pavilion, there is a bell, which can be heard by tens of thousands of households. To the south is the image of Wenxing, which is called "fengxianghuo". In the Qing Dynasty, Peng's "ancestral meeting" was regarded as the "experience of Wenxing Zhongling". It was rebuilt in the second year of Kangxi (1663) and the 17th year of Qianlong (1752), and built Guixiang hall, Chaoyuan Pavilion, Shixi hall and Sanxian hall beside the pavilion. It became a famous place for scholars to lecture. From the 10th year of Xianfeng (1860) to the 2nd year of tongzhi (1863), Wenxing pavilion was used by the Taiping military as a watchtower to visit the military situation, and the attached hall and Zhaitang hall were destroyed by fire. The pavilion was built in the ninth year of Tongzhi, and the only Guixiang hall in the south of the pavilion was built in the eleventh year of Tongzhi.
In the Qing Dynasty, it was rebuilt in the second year of Kangxi (1663) and the 17th year of Qianlong (1752). Besides, Guixiang hall, Chaoyuan hall, Shixi hall and Sanxian hall were built beside the pavilion. It became a famous place for scholars to teach and learn. From the 10th year of Xianfeng (1860) to the 2nd year of tongzhi (1863), Wenxing pavilion was destroyed by war. The pavilion was built in the ninth year of Tongzhi, and the only Guixiang hall in the south of the pavilion was rebuilt in the eleventh year. Renovation was carried out in 1954.
