history
Catholicism was introduced into Suzhou in the late Ming Dynasty. By the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, there were more than 500 Catholics. In 1748, a religious case occurred in Suzhou, which greatly reduced the number of Catholics in the urban area, leaving only a few private houses and shrines. According to legend, yangjiaqiao Catholic Church was originally a private house of Yin, a member of the church. It was destroyed by the war of Taiping army, and later rebuilt by fishermen. It became a gathering place for fishermen, commonly known as "net boat office". In the second year, a hall was built, named "seven bitterness Notre Dame hall". Most of the believers were fishermen and passed on from generation to generation.
In 1958, Catholicism was used as "Suzhou socialist school", but there were still religious activities on Easter, Christmas and other festivals. After 1966, it was transferred to primary schools, factories and other units. In 1981, the government allocated funds for renovation and restoration of religious activities, which were still managed by the Patriotic Catholic Church.
