The red gate is the general gate of the mausoleum. Single eaves, Xieshan style. The top is covered with yellow glazed tiles. Stone plate eaves, red walls, there are three coupons door, for the Qing Dynasty emperor and empress to leave the palace and pay homage to the emperor and minister must pass. The surrounding walls are called red walls, also known as "red city" or "Fengshui wall". The main building of the mausoleum is in the center of it. There are two doors on the East and west sides of Fengshui wall, which are called Donghong gate and Xihong gate respectively. The two doors are one, and they are also arched. The shape and construction of the door are similar to those of Dahong gate, except that the door ring is hexagonal, and the lower part is equipped with xumizuo and guardrail. Zhenghongmen and dongxihongmen have strict rules and regulations for their use. The one in the middle of zhenghongmen is called "Shenmen", which is the entrance for Taizong and empress xiaoduanwen to enter and leave. This door is not open on weekdays. It can only be opened at the time of great sacrifice, but only the officers and soldiers carrying sacrifices and sending blessing boards are allowed to enter the mausoleum from this door. No one else is allowed to pass through it, so people taboo this door. A room on the east side of the red gate is called "junmen", which is a door for the emperor to come to the mausoleum, and a room on the west side is called "Chenmen", which is a door for the ministers to go in and out of the mausoleum. Donghongmen and Xihongmen are the gates for the officials and soldiers of the mausoleum. But in the actual use, it does not fully comply with this regulation. For example, the emperor did not go in and out of the Royal gate and the official gate in front of him, but went through the East and West Red Gate. This may be due to the fear of ancestors. In front of the Red Gate, about 50 meters to the south of Shenqiao, there are dismounting signs on both sides, engraved with "officials and people waiting to dismount here", which is a symbol of the emperor's status in the mausoleum.
