Yunnan Railway Museum

Yunnan Railway Museum is located at 913 Beijing Road, Kunming city. It was built by using the waiting room of Kunming north railway station. It opened in 2004. It mainly displays the development history of Kunming railway, especially the cultural relics of meter gauge railway. The French Michelin diesel power train set is a national first-class cultural relic. This is a high-level business train set, which was put into operation in 1914. The tires are rubber and were used by senior officials of China and France at that time.

With a total area of 3176 square meters, Yunnan Railway Museum has collected and displayed more than 9500 old photos, documents and other historical materials about Yunnan Vietnam Railway. Among them, there are "Michelin locomotive" and locomotive accessories such as passenger cars and freight cars running on Yunnan Vietnam Railway in those years. With strong color contrast and visual techniques of sound, light and electricity, it shows this section of railway A hundred years of history. Yunnan Railway Museum is the only special museum with local railway development history as the content so far in China. It is the witness of the history of old China and an indelible page of Yunnan modern history.

The Yunnan Railway Museum, which epitomizes the hundred years of vicissitudes of the meter gauge railway of Yunnan Vietnam Railway, opened on December 28, 2004.

The meter gauge railway from Kunming to Hekou section of Yunnan Vietnam Railway, built by French colonialists, started operation in 1903 and officially put into operation in 1910. It has accumulated rich historical and cultural resources because of its arduous and magnificent construction and its operation history spanning the times.

The museum has a construction area of 7963 square meters and an exhibition area of 5155 square meters. It collects or displays more than 10000 cultural relics and documents, including 8 first-class cultural relics, 10 second-class cultural relics and 123 third-class cultural relics. It condenses the 100 year history of Yunnan Railway. Because of its unique historical and cultural value, it is named as the national youth education base, the national railway and Yunnan patriotism education base, and Yunnan science popularization education base.

In December 2017, it was selected into the list of the first batch of national primary and secondary school students' research and practice education bases and camps of the Ministry of education.

Development history

Founded in April 1990, formerly known as the "Yunnan narrow gauge railway history exhibition hall" in the waiting room of Kaiyuan railway station.

In February 2003, it was relocated to Kunming north railway station and expanded into a museum.

It was officially opened to the outside world on December 28, 2004.

Due to the demolition and reconstruction of Kunming urban rail transit construction, the new museum opened on May 18, 2014.

Venue composition

The museum is composed of the South Museum and the North Museum. The South museum is based on the French classical architecture of "yunnanfu station" of Yunnan Vietnam Railway. The North museum is a modern architecture with elements of high-speed railway passenger station. Between the two museums, there is a railway steel bridge and three tracks across the station. The museum and the station in operation form a whole.

Gallery bridge

Yunnan Railway Museum uses the corridor bridge connecting the South Museum and the North museum to divide it into two exhibition paths longitudinally with exhibition materials, recording the history and looking forward to the future respectively. On the west side of the Exhibition Road, the labor construction scenes of Yunnan Vietnam Railway are displayed by means of sculpture, while on the east side, the grand and dreamlike exhibition techniques are used to introduce the development of China's high-speed railway and the prospect of Yunnan Railway.

Herringbone Bridge

Yunnan Railway Museum also makes full use of the two steel frame bridge entities in the architectural design, focusing on shaping and exhibition of the famous "herringbone bridge" of Yunnan Vietnam Railway. In addition, the combination of steel beam and multi arch "flower bridge" and steel viaduct model, as well as the scenic scenes such as Wan Tang waterfall and tiger mouth, also give visitors an immersive, fascinating and soul shaking visual effect.

Simulation recovery

In the exhibition hall of the museum, you can see not only the horse Gang utensils, railway survey tools and other cultural relics of the ancient tea horse road, but also the restoration models of Yunnan Railway characteristic buildings and scenes, such as the tunnel excavation scene, the French buildings of Jingdian project Renzi bridge, Huaqiao bridge and bisezhai station, the Chinese and western buildings of Lin'an station, the hall model of Gebi Linping company, and the destruction of Yunnan and Vietnam by Japanese aircraft bombing The scene of Baizhai railway bridge, the dynamic model of difficult and dangerous project of Chengdu Kunming railway, the characteristic project model of Nanpanjiang four line bridge and Nujiang double line bridge of new railway, etc.

Rolling stock display

Four tracks are laid on the ground floor of the museum's North Hall to display locomotives and vehicles of inch gauge, meter gauge, standard gauge and EMU series. There are not only standard gauge locomotive series, meter gauge train series and "Chuncheng" EMU series, but also inch gauge train series and "Michelin" EMU series. Here, the audience can review the evolution of railway locomotives and the changes of railways.

Cultural exhibition area

The three rows of high-rise viewing platforms above the locomotives and vehicles in the North Museum and the corridor from the first floor to the third floor in the south of the museum are the Yunnan Railway culture exhibition area. Visitors can learn about the railway culture, natural and cultural regional characteristics and tourism resources of Yunnan Railway through painting, calligraphy, photography, film and art works.

Yunnan Railway Museum is located on Beijing Road, the central axis of the north-south trunk road in Kunming city. It is the same building as Kunming north railway station. It is located at the starting point of Kunming Hekou Railway (Yunnan section of Yunnan Vietnam Railway in History). It is adjacent to the dispatching building of North Railway station in the East, the underpass tunnel of Beijing Road North Station in the west, the transfer station of North Metro Line 2 on Huancheng North Road in the south, and shijijunyuan community on Union Road in the north.
