Panmen scenic spot

The essence of Pan gate scenic area is "three doors and windows". It is the "gate gate" land and water gate, which is located in the southwest of Suzhou.

Panmen is the only remains of the ancient city gate in Suzhou. The water and land gate of Panmen is unique in China. This structure is easy to defend and difficult to attack. Ruiguang tower was built in the Northern Song Dynasty. The Zhenzhu relic building found in the tower is now the treasure of Suzhou Museum. Wumen Bridge beside Panmen, built in the Song Dynasty, is the largest single hole stone arch bridge in Suzhou.

Panmen scenic area is located in the southwest corner of the ancient city of Suzhou, covering an area of 24.86 hectares. Ruiguang tower, Shuilu gate and Wumen bridge in the scenic area are all national key cultural relics protection units. In order to carry forward the history and culture and speed up the development of tourism, in recent years, Panmen scenic area has renovated the ancient city wall, renovated Ruiguang pagoda, rebuilt the four Rui hall, Wuxiang Temple and free pool, built a pool with three mountains, planted trees and grasses, and built scenic spots such as Lijing building, double Pavilion gallery bridge and shuilian cave. It is a renovation and protection project of Suzhou old city with unique historical and cultural connotation. It is divided into five parts: entrance area, Ming and Qing business district, central courtyard area, western residential area and City Wall Park area, and organically combines Wumen bridge, gupanmen and Ruiguang tower to form a unique landscape tourism pattern.

Development history

Panmen, built in the spring and Autumn period, is one of the eight gates of Suzhou City, which connects the Grand Canal and the dalongjiang river. However, its location has not changed after many times of reconstruction. It was first made as "Panmen" and later changed to "Panmen" because of the intertwining of land and water. In history, the prosperity of Panmen area is second only to changmen and xumen. Panmen is the only remains of the ancient city gate in Suzhou. Today's city wall was built in 1351 A.D. and the urn was added by Zhang Shicheng in 1351 A.D. and then rebuilt in Ming and Qing Dynasties.

The water and land gate of Panmen is unique in China. The two land gates have both inside and outside, and form an urn between the two gates, which is easy to defend and difficult to attack. It is a valuable material for the study of ancient fortifications in China, and it is a castle building suitable for water towns in southern China. Ruiguang tower was built in the first year of Jingde, Zhenzong, Northern Song Dynasty (1004), with a height of 53.57 meters and a height of 9.14 meters Structure.

Cultural relics protection

Panmen scenic area is located in the southwest corner of the ancient city of Suzhou, with many historic sites and rich cultural landscape. It was listed as a cultural relic protection unit in Suzhou in 1963 and a cultural relic protection unit in Jiangsu Province in 1982. According to ancient records, Suzhou city is the capital of the state of Wu in the spring and Autumn period. Panmen is one of the eight gates of Wu, which was called Panmen in ancient times. There was a wooden dragon hanging on the door to frighten the state of Yue. It was also named because of its "half water and half land, moving along and flexing".

The existing Panmen is consistent with the stele of Pingjiang map of the Southern Song Dynasty. The overall layout and architectural structure basically keep the old view of the late Yuan and early Ming Dynasties. The water and land gates are crisscrossed and juxtaposed in the north and south, and the general plane is in the shape of a curved ruler, facing 10 degrees to the east by south. It is the only ancient water and land gate preserved in Suzhou today.

Ruiguang tower, Shuilu gate and Wumen bridge are national, provincial and municipal cultural relics protection units. In order to carry forward the history and culture and speed up the development of tourism, in recent years, Panmen scenic spot has repaired the ancient city wall, renovated Ruiguang pagoda, rebuilt the four Rui hall, Wuxiang Temple and free pool, built a pool with three mountains, planted trees and grasses, and built scenic spots such as Lijing building, taoyincuiye, shuangting gallery bridge and shuilian cave. The scenic spot has become a unique historical and cultural tourist attraction in Suzhou.

A number of precious cultural relics have been found in the tower, such as Zhenzhu relic building and wood carving of Fahuajing. The Wumen bridge beside the Panmen gate was built in the Song Dynasty, and now it was built in 1872. The arch span is 16 meters long and the arch height is 9.85 meters. It is the largest single hole stone arch bridge in Suzhou. Its shape is simple, and it is made of Jinshan stone. The two ends of the bridge are connected by stone steps, with 50 steps at each end.

About 18.9km starting point: Wujiang City

From the starting point to the west, drive along Xianfu road for 80 meters and turn right into Zhongshan South Road

Drive 270 meters along Zhongshan South Road and turn left ahead

Drive 10 meters, turn left ahead and enter Liuhong road

Drive along Liuhong road for 410 meters, turn right ahead and enter North Chuxiang road

Drive 2.0KM along North Chuxiang Road, turn left ahead and enter West Jiangling road

Drive 1.0KM along Jiangling West Road and go straight into Jiangling North Road

Drive 2.0KM along Jiangling North Road and enter suzhentao highway

Drive 890 meters along suzhentao highway, turn left and enter Youxin viaduct

Drive along Youxin viaduct for 9.0km, turn right towards south ring viaduct and enter South Ring Viaduct

Drive 1.3km along the south ring viaduct and go straight into the South Ring East Road

Drive along South Ring East Road for 700 meters and turn left

Drive 20 meters straight into panxu road

Drive 840 meters along panxu road and turn right into Panmen road

Drive 310m along Panmen road to the terminal point (on the left side of the road) terminal point: Panmen road

Traffic information

Take bus No. 2 and 5, No. 7, No. 39 (original No. 30) and No. 701 to Panmen scenic station. Panmen scenic area can also be reached 200 meters west from Taihua commercial building on Renmin Road.
