brief introduction
Gansu Research Center for endangered animals of the Ministry of forestry was established in November 1987 with the approval of the former Ministry of forestry and the people's Government of Gansu Province. It is located in Chengdong science and technology demonstration park of Wuwei city. It is mainly engaged in the rescue, protection and breeding of endangered animals and the comprehensive management of Dongshawo desert. In November 1994, with the approval of the former Ministry of forestry, Shenzhou Desert Wildlife Park was established on the basis of the center.
In today's wildlife park, there are more than 200 animals of 16 kinds of national first and second level protected animals, such as Saiga antelope, Przewalski wild horse, golden monkey, wild camel, wild donkey, takin, white lipped deer, sika deer, brown bear, black bear, etc.; and 2100 square meters of animal buildings have been built, including bainiayuan, ostrich hall, sheep hall, rooster hall, pet hall, etc More than 300 of 41 species of ornamental animals, including black necked Crane, mandarin duck, ostrich, red bellied pheasant, rock sheep, Arabian baboon and raccoon, have been built. An 800 square meter Specimen Exhibition Hall has been built, and more than 800 specimens of various animals and plants have been produced and displayed.
At the same time, the zoo also built fishing pool, outdoor swimming room, desert racetrack, beer Square, Shenzhou leisure park entertainment projects, purchased and installed 8 pieces of jungle flying mice, flight performance tower and other amusement facilities, completed the 500 mu artificial lake project, equipped with 10 cruise ships, paved 3500 square meters of colored brick road, planted 30000 square meters of lawn, planted more than 32000 kinds of trees, and equipped with The flower bed covers an area of 6500 square meters. In the past, the barren beach and sandy land were covered with trees and flowers.
Conservation achievements
By the end of 2008, Gansu endangered animal research center and Shenzhou Desert Wildlife Park had successfully introduced and bred 28 species of rare and endangered animals (including birds), including Saiga antelope, przewalskii wild horse, golden monkey, wild camel, wild donkey, takin, white lipped deer, Tibetan gazelle, and more than 300 heads (individuals and horses). Due to its outstanding achievements in wildlife protection, breeding and research, it was awarded the titles of "provincial advanced unit of wildlife protection" and "national advanced unit of wildlife protection and breeding" respectively by Gansu Provincial Forestry Department and China Wildlife Protection Association.
wild camel
Wild camel is a world-class endangered species. It is only distributed in Xinjiang, Gansu and some parts of the people's Republic of Mongolia in China. There are only about 800 peaks in the world. Gansu research center of endangered animals has carried out the research and protection of wild camel breeding and domestication since 1988, and has achieved preliminary results. By July 2010, the number of wild camels in Shenzhou Desert Wildlife Park has reached 20 peaks, which is the largest artificial breeding population of wild camels in the world.
equus przewalskii
Since 1989, Gansu endangered animal research center has successively introduced 18 Przewalski wild horses from Beijing Zoo, San Diego Zoo, Tel Park and Munich zoo. By May 2002, the number of wild horses in stock had increased to 37, not including 14 transferred from other provinces in China, making it the second largest breeding and protection base of wild horses in China after Xinjiang. By September 2010, the population had reached 74.
In 2004, the center started the project of releasing the wild horse with an investment of 4 million yuan from the State Forestry Administration. In July 2010, the State Forestry Administration assigned experts from the Chinese Academy of Forestry Sciences and Beijing Forestry University to systematically investigate and demonstrate the vegetation, water source, hidden conditions, mode and intensity of economic activities of people and other factors related to the survival of wild horses in the planned release area, and determined maquanwan and houkengzi areas of Dunhuang West Lake Nature Reserve as experimental release bases. Gansu research center of endangered animals selected the most suitable wild horses to form the released population. After anesthesia, capture and packing on September 21, the seven Przewalski wild horses traveled more than 1000 kilometers from Wuwei to Dunhuang West Lake National Nature Reserve after more than 20 hours. They have been kept in the regional adaptive enclosure for 4 days. On September 25, the formal experimental release was carried out to make the wild horses as soon as possible Wild, rejuvenation, restoration of natural wildness, return to nature. This is the first time that China has released the wild horse outside Xinjiang.
Saiga antelope
Saiga antelope is an ancient animal. Its horn is a traditional Chinese medicine. It has not been found in the wild for nearly 40 years. In 1988, Gansu endangered animal research center introduced two Saiga antelopes from San Diego Zoo for the first time. At the end of the same year, six Saiga antelopes were introduced from the city. In 1990, the center effectively introduced 11 more Saiga antelopes from Tel Park in Germany. Since then, China has also had Saiga antelopes.
In order to recover this species and obtain antelope for domestication research, we undertook the "Seventh Five Year" key project "domestication research of introduced antelope" issued by the State Administration of medicine, and systematically studied the ecology, reproduction, breeding, feeding, management, disease prevention and control of Saiga antelope. The project passed the ministry level appraisal in 1994, and its achievements reached the advanced level of similar work abroad. Among them, the research on artificial feeding and alfalfa digestion reached the international leading level, and the project won the third prize of science and technology progress award of State Administration of traditional Chinese medicine.
After years of systematic research on ecological behavior, feeding management, artificial breeding, disease prevention and control of Saiga antelope, the number of Saiga antelope on hand reached 79 in May 2011, and more than 100 at the end of 2011. It is the only artificial domestication, breeding, protection and research base of Saiga antelope in China.
Golden Monkey
Sichuan snub nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana) is a rare animal endemic to China, which belongs to the first class national protected animal. The breeding of Rhinopithecus roxellana in zoos close to its habitat has been successful, but the research on ex situ breeding in semi desert area is still a blank. Gansu research center of endangered animals introduced Sichuan snub nosed monkeys for artificial breeding in 1992, and 13 of them survived in October 2004. The artificial breeding of Sichuan snub nosed monkeys in semi desert area has achieved initial success, which is the first in the world. It also lays a foundation for the ex situ protection of Sichuan snub nosed monkeys in a wider range.
scientific research
In many years of work on breeding and protection of endangered animals, Gansu research center of endangered animals and Shenzhou Desert Wildlife Park have accumulated and summarized a lot of practical experience and theoretical basis, and conducted in-depth exploration and Research on animal nutrition, ethology, epidemic disease prevention, special physiological stage and anesthesia, and effectively strengthened animal feeding and management, and strengthened cooperation with colleges and universities Through the cooperation and exchange of scientific research institutes, the practice base of Life Sciences Academy of Lanzhou University has been set up in the center, and the research on wild camel has been carried out in cooperation with the center; the research work on DNA research project of Proctor's wild horse, research project on adaptability and population expansion of Saiga antelope and development of animals, plants and grassland in Qilian Mountain ecotone has been carried out smoothly, which has promoted the breeding research of endangered animals The research work is progressing smoothly.
Desert management
Shenzhou Desert Wildlife Park is dedicated to the research of afforestation and soil and water fixation and sand control. It is a desert plant nature reserve in Gansu Province, and has been included in the research project of the United Nations Desert Research Institute. Hundreds of desert plants have been planted in the desert park to carry out the research on the protection and breeding of desert plants, so as to improve the desert vegetation and soil fixation and sand control To explore the way of scientific development. Faced with the current situation of fragile ecology, heavy control tasks, reactivation of some control areas and vegetation decline, Gansu endangered animal research center and Shenzhou Desert Wildlife Park made a decisive decision to take planting trees and grasses and improving the ecological environment as the fundamental measures and entry points for the implementation of the national western development, and formulated the policy of "taking science and technology as the guide, ecological construction as the key, and project construction as the key" The first five-year afforestation plan of the center has been worked out and the regional construction plan has been determined. By December 2008, Haloxylon ammodendron, birch stick, Calligonum mongolicum, Calligonum mongolicum, etc
