history
In 1997, Sun Hung Kai Real Estate signed an agreement with the Hong Kong government to develop Ma Wan, including a residential project, Perry Bay, and Ma Wan theme park. The government will subsidize the construction cost of HK $800 million for the theme park, and Sun Hung Kai properties will be responsible for its construction and operation. According to the land grant terms of that year, the first phase facilities of the theme park need to be completed before June 17, 2006, while the second phase has not been decided yet.
In 2001, Perry Bay used Ma Wan theme park as a selling point in its publicity work. Later, Perry Bay joined in August 2002. At the end of September 2005, Sun Hung Kai Real Estate officially announced the construction of the first phase of Ma Wan theme park.
In mid-2006, Sun Hung Kai Real Estate failed to complete the first phase of the facilities on schedule in accordance with the land grant terms of that year, but the government has not taken any action for the time being.
On July 1, 2007, the first phase of the nature park of Ma Wan Park was officially opened in a low-key manner, which did not attract extensive media coverage in Hong Kong.
Development plan
Ma Wan Park is divided into two phases. The first phase costs over HK $400 million and covers an area of about 20 hectares. It mainly focuses on natural ecology and environmental protection. It has the following facilities:
The building was jointly constructed and conceived by Sun Hung Kai Properties and the Hong Kong Christian youth army. It imitates Noah's Ark recorded in the Bible and refers to various relevant historical documents. It is the first project in the world to build a mock Noah's Ark. The ark building is five stories high, with a multi-media exhibition hall on the ground floor, displaying major biblical historical stories, including the legend of the great flood and Noah's ark, a creative science education center and a cinema. On the upper floor, there are hostels with 296 beds, as well as the general building, offices, training center, multi-purpose activity room, indoor activity facilities, offices, barracks and restaurants for Christian groups.
Located near Noah's ark, the garden displays statues and introductions of about 200 prehistoric and endangered animals.
This facility is located at the top of the hill in the center of the theme park and consists of six characteristic Gardens:
·Miscanthus Garden
·Wild Orchid Garden
·Azalea garden
·Hong Kong Garden
·Dong'Ao Garden
·South American Garden
Each garden has its own theme, with different varieties of trees and flowers set off different characteristics, forming a large flower garden. Developers expect the park to become a hot spot for newlyweds.
The sun Pavilion in the park is the first civil sun Pavilion in Southeast Asia. The museum has a solar telescope for visitors to observe the activities on the surface of the sun, such as sunspots, prominence and magnetic light.
In addition to the above main facilities, other facilities in phase I of the park include:
·"Life journey" amusement facilities
·Demonstration of renewable energy facilities
·Peak viewing platform
·Ma Wan Museum of history
·Multi purpose performance venue
·Butterfly House
·Antique Village
·Outdoor training center
·2 basketball courts
·Tourist attractions and scenic spots
·Wetland and conservation area
·Ecological conservation path
·Water sports center
·Commercial building
·Fire education center and Museum
The main theme of the second phase of the park is Mawan fishing village, but there is no detailed plan.
Opinions of all parties
Ma Wan theme park will be the second local theme park after Hong Kong Ocean Park. It is also of great educational significance. It can attract Hong Kong people from all over the world to visit and provide them with more leisure and tourism facilities. The park will also help promote the local economy and create a lot of employment opportunities. This distinctive theme park is also expected to attract tourists of different tastes to visit Hong Kong. Although there is already Hong Kong Disneyland in Penny's Bay on Lantau Island nearby, it is generally believed that it can complement each other and make that area a multi scenic tourist area.
As for the construction of Noah's Ark in Ma Wan theme park, some people in Hong Kong are worried that its theme will exaggerate superstition and destroy science education. Opponents have also set up a website to collect signatures, and asked Sun Hung Kai Real Estate Group to make clear in a prominent place that the content of the park belongs to mythology rather than science.
Another theme park
In addition to Sun Hung Kai's Ma Wan theme park, there is a 12 hectare piece of land in the south of Ma Wan reserved for another theme park. In 2001, with the support of Sun Hung Kai real estate, a consortium once proposed to develop a plan called Hong Kong snow park, which is mainly the only indoor ski complex in Southeast Asia. The project was originally scheduled to start construction in November 2001, but it had to be stopped because Sun Hung Kai Property suddenly withdrew its support. In August 2004, the Hong Kong government re tendered the land. Only two companies, including Hong Kong snow park, bid for the land. However, in the end, the government did not accept all the bids. The land remains vacant. Since then, the development of the land and the plan of the snow park in Hong Kong have not been discussed.
