It is adjacent to the Pacific Ocean in the East, Taiwan Strait in the West and Bashi Strait in the south. It is the southern gateway of Taiwan Island and the most famous scenic spot in Taiwan. Due to the warm climate, Phalaenopsis used to spread all over the place. The ancient name of Hengchun, Langqiao, is the transliteration of "orchid" in Paiwan language.
Historical evolution
Hengchun Town, formerly known as "Langqiao", is a "Langqiao community" inhabited by Gaoshan people. In 1874, the event of Peony Society happened in Hengchun Peninsula. Shen Baozhen, the imperial minister, supervised the military affairs. When he visited the area, he found that it was not fortified. Considering that it was located at the southernmost tip of Taiwan Island, its geographical position was very important, and it was like spring in four seasons, so it was named Hengchun and a separate county was set up.
In 1875, the construction of Hengchun city began. In 1879, it was completed with a perimeter of 880 feet and a foundation of 2 feet. It has four gates in Southeast and northwest. The tower is 1.7 feet high and 6.9 feet wide. It stands majestically and becomes the gateway to the south of Taiwan Island. During the period of Japanese occupation, Hengchun belonged to Kaohsiung Prefecture. After the restoration of Taiwan, Hengchun town was established in 1946.
Geology and geomorphology
The terrain is high on the East and west sides of the territory. The southernmost end of the central mountain range is located in the east of the town, reaching the southernmost end of Taiwan Island, oluanbi. Laofoshan, located in the northeast, is 674 meters above sea level, the highest peak in the territory.
On the west side is the Hengchun platform with an altitude of 200-300 meters. In the middle is the Hengchun plain, which is about 6 kilometers long from north to South and 2.5 kilometers wide from east to west, covering an area of more than 40 square kilometers. Most of them are located in Hengchun town. Longluantan and caotan, located in the central and southern part of the town, are the irrigation water sources for the whole town. Among them, Longluantan covers an area of 137 hectares.
Natural climate
The annual average temperature of the town is 25 ℃. The average temperature in July is only 28 ℃, which is 1 ℃ lower than that of Taipei city. The average temperature in January is 21 ℃, which is 5 ℃ higher than that of Taipei city. The annual precipitation is 1960 mm, and the rainy season is mainly from May to October.
From September to march of the next year, there are more "downwind". This kind of wind is due to the northeast monsoon that affects Taiwan. After it reaches Hengchun Peninsula, the central mountain range has been reduced to a low mountain of 300-400 meters, which has no blocking effect. Strong wind sweeps down the mountain, so it is called "downwind". This strong wind lost all the water in the process of going south. When it reached Hengchun, it was as dry and hot as fire, and caused dust all over the sky. The wind was like a typhoon. It was the most disastrous weather on Hengchun Peninsula.
Due to the abundant sunshine and strong dry and hot downwind, onion is rich for planting. In addition, Hengchun introduced Qiongma in 1901 to make ropes, sacks and other daily necessities. It played an important role in the colonial economy during the Japanese occupation. It once won the reputation of "Oriental light". Although it has declined, Qiongma has become the symbol of Hengchun.
Hengchun is located in a tropical climate, with coral reef topography on the south coast. In 1982, Taiwan's first National Park, Kenting National Park, was established here.
traffic
In the past, dabanlong (Nanwan) was the main port for external transportation and maritime transportation in the region, which bypassed the southern end of oluanbi and went north to Taitung. On the other hand, in 1787 (the 52nd year of Qianlong), Lin shuangwen's comrades retreated to Jianshan, where they were able to level off general Fu kang'an. For the first time, the Junwei operation opened the way to Langqiao and stimulated the Han people's migration.
In 1877 (the third year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu), Bao Fukang reclaimed the "Fenggang Beinan road", from Fenggang to the Beinan mountain road through alangden, Taitung, which is today's Nanhui Road, or from Hengchun to Manzhou and Jiupeng, across Xuhai on the east coast of Gangzi village, and then to Taitung at tiedingshi. In recent years, the improvement of No.9 provincial highway of Taiwan, the opening of Ping'e highway, jia'e highway, etc. and the opening of Nanhui railway.
Hengchun area has long relied on Ping'e highway on line 26 of Taiwan. Due to Kenting Park and tropical marine climate, it attracts a large number of tourists to engage in water activities from June to September, resulting in serious traffic jam on holidays. The government plans to build Hengchun railway to solve related traffic problems. In the future, passengers will be able to take the high-speed railway to Zuoying station, transfer to the South Loop railway to Fangliao, and then transfer to passenger transport.
Aviation Hengchun Airport (Wuliting Airport): in winter, because the runway direction is perpendicular to the downwind direction, it is often closed; in summer, there is an average flight of Lirong airlines from Taipei to Hengchun every day, sailing for about one hour.

There is a blue road from Kaohsiung port to Haikou by sea, but it has been stopped in 2003.
Hengchun town's external traffic mainly relies on the highway from Kaohsiung City through the western coast to erluanbi. During the 1980s, this highway has been widened into a four lane high-grade highway, and the county-level highway can reach Manzhou township. In addition, there is a helicopter airport in the north of the town, so the traffic is still convenient.
economic development
Hengchun town has always been based on agricultural production, crop cultivation has been "three treasures", namely Qiongma, onion, watermelon. These three crops are not afraid of the wind. Among them, Qiongma was introduced to Taiwan in 1901, and several plants were transplanted to Hengchun breeding farm in the next year. After the restoration of Taiwan, due to its diversified uses, Qiongma was widely used in hammocks, sack weaving, shoes, carpets, brushes and paper making. The residents of the town cut down the trees one after another and planted Qiongma, with the highest yield of more than 200 tons per month.
In 1965, in order to send troops to fight in Vietnam, the United States carried out a six-month training exercise in Hengchun. As a result, a large number of Qiongma gardens were destroyed, and they never recovered.
It was not until the mid-1980s that some sightseeing Qiongma gardens were set up to develop tourism in the town. In addition to the "three treasures", there are bananas, betel nuts, tomatoes and other crops in the town. Among them, erluanbi is not only the dividing point between the Pacific Ocean and Bashi Strait, but also a lighthouse built in 1882. It was rebuilt several times. The lighthouse is 18 meters high and 110 meters long. It is white and cylindrical. It is divided into four layers. There are iron ladders to reach the top of the lighthouse. The light flashes every 10 seconds and the range can reach to the sea. It is the lighthouse with the strongest light power in the province.
All ships sailing in the Taiwan Strait and the Western Pacific Ocean can use this light to determine their course when passing through the nearby waters, so they are known as "the light of East Asia". In addition, the town also has Hengchun ancient city, Ford temple, Guangning palace, Zhennan palace and other historic sites.
