Wangfujing Catholic Church, commonly known as Dongtang, also known as Saint Joseph's church and bamiancao church, is located at 74 Wangfujing Street, Dongcheng District, Beijing. It is the second church built by Jesuits in Beijing after Xuanwumen Catholic Church.

The existing church building of Wangfujing Catholic Church is a three story Romanesque building. In the treatment of architectural details, many elements of traditional Chinese architecture are integrated. The whole building successfully integrates the styles of Chinese and Western architecture. In 2000, with the renovation of Wangfujing Street, the Beijing municipal government invested in the construction of a square in front of the church, which made Wangfujing Catholic Church a landscape of Wangfujing pedestrian street, and Wangfujing Catholic Church became the most well-known Catholic Church in Beijing.

Wangfujing Catholic Church is one of the four largest Catholic churches in Beijing. It was founded by two missionaries, Italian and Portuguese. At the end of Ming Dynasty, they preached in Sichuan. In the early Qing Dynasty, they were taken to Beijing by the Qing soldiers and worked as servants in suwang mansion. In 1655, Fulin gave them a house and a vacant lot. They built a church on the vacant lot, which is the second church in Beijing (the first is the South Church), which is the earliest East Church. In the East Hall, the Catholic church sits in the middle, facing the East and the west, with about 30 rooms in total. Three crosses stand on the top of the church, big in the middle and small on both sides. There are 18 round brick pillars in the hall, and many oil paintings such as the crucifixion are hung on both sides. There are classrooms in the South and west of the hall, and a courtyard in the East. There are flower beds, bungalows and buildings in the hall, which are the residence of the priest. There were many sacred statues painted by the court painter Lang shining in the East Hall, which were abolished after the fire in the 12th year of Jiaqing (1807). In 1884, the Romanesque hall was rebuilt and burned in the Boxer Movement. In 1904, it was rebuilt with "Boxer Indemnity" (jointly built by France and Ireland), that is, today's Dongtang. In the East Hall, the Catholic church sits in the middle, facing east and West, with a width of 25 meters. There are about 30 rooms in total. They are located on the bluestone foundation. There are three crosses on the top of the hall, big in the middle and small on both sides. There are 18 round brick pillars in the hall, 65 cm in diameter, with square bases. It will be a three-dimensional garden of flowers, shrubs and trees. Because it is mainly rose, it has a nice name rose garden. The artificial spring flowing out of the rose garden is named "diequan" because it cascades down the south side of the square. The whole church square is more than 1 meter above the ground, making it more distinctive. It is said that there will be a wine cellar under the rose garden because it is completely designed according to the Western Catholic Church.

Current situation of Architecture

At present, the main building of Wangfujing Catholic Church is well preserved. The building is in Roman style, with a width of 25 meters and 30 rooms. The whole building is located on the bluestone base. There are three domed bell towers on the facade. There are three crosses on the top of the building. The middle one is tall, and the bell towers and domes on both sides are relatively small. There are 18 round brick pillars in the church space, with a diameter of 65cm and a square base. There are many oil paintings such as the crucifixion hanging on both sides of the church. In 1988, the reconstruction of Wangfujing Street began, and the buildings around Dongtang were demolished one after another. In 2000, after the reconstruction project of Wangfujing Street, the wall was removed and the church gate moved westward, forming a city square on the west side of the church, which became a landscape of Wangfujing Street.
