Beijing Jiaotong University is a national key university directly under the Ministry of education, jointly built by the Ministry of education, China Railway Corporation and Beijing Municipal People's government. It is a national "211 Project", "985 project advantage discipline innovation platform" project construction university and one of the first batch of doctoral and master's degree awarding universities in China with graduate school. The "2011 plan" and "rail transit safety Collaborative Innovation Center" led by our university is one of the first batch of 14 national collaborative innovation centers.

The school is located in Haidian District, the capital of Beijing, adjacent to ZhongGuanCun, China's "Silicon Valley". It has two campuses, East and West, with a total area of more than 1000 mu and a building area of 840000 square meters. Beijing Jiaotong University, as one of the three sources of Jiaotong University, has a historical origin dating back to 1896. Its predecessor was the Beijing railway management training institute founded by the Qing government. It is the first university specialized in training management talents in China and the birthplace of modern railway management and telecommunication education in China. In 1917, it was reorganized into Beijing Railway Management School and Beijing post and Telecommunications School. In 1921, it merged with Shanghai Technical School and Tangshan technical school to form Jiaotong University. After the reorganization of Jiaotong University in 1923, Beijing Branch changed its name to Beijing Jiaotong University. In 1950, the University was named North Jiaotong University, and Mao Yisheng, a famous bridge expert, became its president. In 1952, the North Jiaotong University was abolished, and the two academies of Beijing and Tangshan became independent, and the University was renamed Beijing Railway University. In 1970, the name of "North Jiaotong University" was restored. In 2000, it was merged with Beijing Electric Power College and transferred from the Ministry of Railways to the Ministry of education. In 2003, the name of Beijing Jiaotong University was resumed. The school has trained Liu Han, the founder of China's first radio station, Ying Shangcai, the designer of China's first high-power steam engine, Zheng Zhenduo, a modern Chinese writer, literary critic and literary historian, Jin Shixuan, the author of China's first railway transport monograph, Xu Jing, the founder of China's railway transport economics, and Yang Rumei, one of China's four earliest accountants Xiang zhejun, the chief prosecutor of the Tokyo trial, and Ma Yinchu, a famous economist and demographer in China, have all taught in our university.
