Anhui University of traditional Chinese medicine was founded in 1959. Its predecessor was the advanced course of traditional Chinese medicine in Anhui Province founded in 1952. In 1959, Anhui provincial government officially approved the establishment of Anhui College of traditional Chinese medicine. In 1970, Anhui College of traditional Chinese medicine was incorporated into Anhui Medical College. In 1975, the Ministry of Education approved the restoration of Anhui College of traditional Chinese medicine. In 2000, Anhui Medical School was incorporated into Anhui College of traditional Chinese medicine. In 2011, the provincial government approved the establishment of Anhui College of traditional Chinese medicine on the basis of Anhui College of traditional Chinese medicine. In 2013, the Ministry of Education approved Anhui University of traditional Chinese medicine to be renamed Anhui University of traditional Chinese medicine.

The university is the national clinical research base of traditional Chinese medicine, the national modern science and technology industry (Anhui) base of traditional Chinese medicine, the national international cooperation base of traditional Chinese medicine, the national clinical research base of drugs, the national doctor authorized unit, and the test free unit recommended by postgraduates. In 2005, the University passed the undergraduate teaching evaluation of the Ministry of education with good results. In 2009 and 2016, the University passed the pilot certification of traditional Chinese medicine and traditional Chinese medicine of the Ministry of education with excellent results.

The school now covers a total area of 1171 mu, with three campuses: shaoquanhu, Meishan road and Shihe road. They are located at No.1 Qianjiang Road, Xinzhan District, Hefei City, 103 Meishan Road, Shushan District, and 45 Shihe Road, Shushan district. The total value of teaching and scientific research instruments and equipment is 189.07 million yuan. The library has a collection of nearly 2 million books (989300 of which are paper books), and the Department of ancient books has a collection of 33000 thread bound books of ancient books, which is the "national key protection unit of ancient books". The traditional Chinese medicine specimen center has stored 150000 wax leaf specimens of medicinal plants, which is the most abundant herbarium in China. Xin'an medical culture center is the base of traditional Chinese medicine culture propaganda and education in Anhui Province.

The school has 14820 full-time students (including 1246 doctoral and master students). At present, there are 16 secondary colleges (departments) (including 3 directly affiliated hospitals) and 5 non directly affiliated hospitals. At present, there are more than 3000 teaching staff (including the Affiliated Hospital), including more than 500 people with deputy senior titles or above. There are 2 masters of traditional Chinese medicine, 5 university leaders in Anhui Province, 31 doctoral tutors and 472 master tutors; there are 15 special subsidies from the State Council and 8 special subsidies from the provincial government; there are 25 academic and technical leaders and reserve talents in Anhui Province; and there are 26 tutors of national famous veteran TCM academic experience program. There are 61 well-known experts and scholars from home and abroad as visiting professors.

At present, the university has 24 undergraduate specialties (including 5 characteristic specialties of the Ministry of education, and 22 specialties are included in one enrollment), including 3 first-class doctoral degree awarding points, 5 first-class master degree awarding points, 25 second-class master degree awarding points, and 5 Master degree awarding points. There are 1 domestic first-class discipline class B project, 2 major discipline construction projects in Anhui Province, 17 key disciplines of the State Administration of traditional Chinese medicine, and 11 provincial class B key disciplines. There are 7 national key clinical specialties of the Ministry of health, 21 key construction specialties of the State Administration of traditional Chinese medicine, and 23 key specialties of traditional Chinese medicine in Anhui Province.

The school takes personnel training as the first priority, firmly establishes the status of teaching center, takes improving the quality of education and teaching as the eternal theme, pays attention to the cultivation of students' innovative spirit and ability, adheres to the school running characteristics of "carrying forward Xin'an medicine and cultivating talents of traditional Chinese medicine", and pays attention to the cultivation of inheritance ability and innovation ability on the basis of solid professional teaching, so as to continuously improve the quality of personnel training High. At present, the university has 2 national teaching teams, 8 provincial teaching teams, 1 national excellent course, 1 national excellent resource sharing course, 35 provincial excellent courses, 2 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 1 national comprehensive reform pilot project, 2 national excellent doctor (traditional Chinese Medicine) education and training plans, and 2 famous teachers in Colleges and universities of traditional Chinese medicine. The school pays attention to the highlight of school running characteristics, deeply promotes teaching reform, holds Xin'an medical teaching reform experimental class, and establishes clinical objective structured examination center. We should set up the extracurricular scientific and technological innovation and entrepreneurship fund for college students, carry out the knowledge and skills competition and challenge cup for college students with "100 awards, 1000 participants and 10000 beneficiaries", and carry out various social practice activities. The Affiliated Hospital of Institute of Neurology is an influential specialized hospital with the advantage of "diagnosis and treatment of hepatolenticular degeneration" at home and abroad. Guoyitang is a medical unit with pure traditional Chinese medicine as the main medical means for the majority of patients. It has become an important force to carry out social services.

The school has established friendly cooperative relations with 50 medical and educational institutions in 19 countries and regions including the United States and Australia. In 1994, it was approved to recruit foreign students, and students from more than 20 countries and regions came to the university to study for master's degree, bachelor's degree and clinical research. We have carried out exchange visits and student exchanges with universities in the United States, Sweden, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.
