Hainan Tropical Ocean University is located in Sanya, a beautiful international tropical coastal tourism city. It is the only full-time application-oriented provincial university in the southernmost part of China, which is jointly built by Hainan Provincial People's government, State Oceanic Administration, CNOOC, Sanya Municipal People's government and Sansha Municipal People's government It is the cradle of talent cultivation and the base of knowledge innovation, social service and cultural inheritance in the minority areas of South Central Province.

Founded in 1954, the school has two campuses, Sanya and Wuzhishan, covering a total area of more than 2100 mu. The existing total construction area is 532900 square meters. The total value of fixed assets is 1026.6641 million yuan; the total value of teaching and scientific research equipment is 177.2207 million yuan; the collection of paper books is 1.4805 million, e-books is 484400 (volumes), self purchase and sharing of 32 kinds of databases, and self built database is 5.

The university has 12 secondary colleges, 1 master of Tourism Management (MTA) program, 52 undergraduate majors and 6 junior college majors, covering 9 disciplines including arts, science, engineering, management, law, history, agriculture, education and art. The school has 18 marine related majors (directions) including marine science, and has determined six major disciplines and fields of marine humanities and history, marine tourism, marine management, marine food, marine information, marine biological ecology and environment. At present, the school has more than 1200 staff, including more than 840 full-time teachers, more than 410 teachers with senior professional titles, more than 600 teachers with master's degree or above, and 2 double academicians. There are not only State Council special experts, provincial experts, national candidates of "New Century Talents Project", provincial 515 talents first and second level candidates, national excellent teachers, provincial famous teachers, but also double qualified teachers from enterprises and scientific research institutes.

The school has more than 17000 full-time students, including 120 master's degree students, 14100 undergraduate students, 2900 junior college students and more than 100 international students. Hainan has made great achievements in the study of Li and Miao local culture.
