Inner Mongolia Agricultural University is a key university in the autonomous region and one of the first batch of 32 cultural quality education bases for college students. In 2001, the University became the key supporting construction institution of "one province, one university" in the national western development. In 2012, it became a University jointly built by the people's Government of the autonomous region and the State Forestry Administration. In 2013, it entered the ranks of supporting institutions in the national "revitalization plan of higher education in the central and western regions". Located in Hohhot, a famous historical and cultural city in China, the university is a "national greening model unit" and known as a "garden style university" outside the Great Wall.

Inner Mongolia Agricultural University is the earliest undergraduate university in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, which was established by the merger of Inner Mongolia agriculture and Animal Husbandry College and Inner Mongolia Forestry College in 1999. In 1952, the Department of animal husbandry and veterinary medicine of Hebei Agricultural College and Pingyuan Agricultural College and the veterinary specialty of Shanxi Agricultural College moved to Hohhot, and Inner Mongolia animal husbandry and veterinary college, the first undergraduate college in Inner Mongolia, was established. In 1960, Inner Mongolia animal husbandry and veterinary college was renamed Inner Mongolia agriculture and Animal Husbandry College. In 1958, Inner Mongolia Forestry College was established, which is the first forestry college established in minority areas of new China.

The university is a multi-disciplinary university with eight disciplines, including agriculture, engineering, science, economics, management, arts, law and art. At present, the university has 21 Colleges (departments) including the College of animal science, and the vocational and technical college is the construction unit of the national higher vocational education model colleges. The school has more than 34000 full-time students, including 2591 doctoral and master's degree students. Since its establishment for more than 60 years, the university has trained more than 120000 talents of all kinds, covering all parts of the motherland. The university has 1 national key discipline, 3 national key (cultivation) disciplines, 1 key discipline of the Ministry of agriculture, 3 key disciplines of the State Forestry Administration, 5 key first-class disciplines of the autonomous region, 22 key disciplines of the autonomous region, and 4 key (cultivation) disciplines of the autonomous region. Among them, 323 are funded by the National Natural Science foundation of China, including one National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and four key projects.
