Lanzhou vocational and technical college is an ordinary college affiliated to Lanzhou municipal government. At present, it covers an area of 321 mu, with 4812 students, 289 full-time teachers, 6 departments and 40 majors, and the total value of teaching, training and experimental equipment is more than 40 million yuan. Its predecessor was Lanzhou No.35 Middle School, which was established in 1975. In 1984, it was transformed into Lanzhou vocational and technical school. In 1998 and 1999, it merged Lanzhou engineering vocational school and Lanzhou No.17 middle school. In 2001, it was upgraded to an ordinary higher vocational college.

The college always adheres to the direction of higher education, adheres to the type of vocational education, takes the "quintessence of Chinese culture to cultivate people, culture to establish the college" as its school running characteristics and philosophy, implements the strategy of scientific development, sustainable development and leapfrog development, and cultivates high-quality, high skilled and zero adaptation applied talents.

The college has a number of provincial and municipal scientific research projects. Four courses, including the structure and principle of automobile engine, were awarded provincial excellent courses. The students won the first prize in the provincial skills competition of oral English, graphics and image processing, accounting practice and computer network technology. It has won the honor of national advanced unit of vocational education and national advanced unit of civilization.

The college constantly innovates the form of Ideological and political education for college students, integrates the cultural education of Peking Opera into the whole process of education, hones and improves the spirit of teachers and students with national culture, and explores and practices an innovative road of traditional culture infiltrating into modern education, and a road of combining the cultural education of Peking Opera with the ideological and political education for college students. The college has twice won the "golden chrysanthemum Award" of the Ministry of culture. In 2006, the special feature film "yingri lotus is another red" with the theme of Peking Opera Education won the first prize of the Ministry of education. In October 2008, the Peking Opera Education documentary drama "quintessence of Chinese culture" participated in the first China University Drama Festival sponsored by the Ministry of education on behalf of Gansu universities and won the highest award of the first China University Drama Festival. Li Xiaojie, member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Provincial Committee and Minister of publicity, said that "the quintessence of Chinese culture is not only the contribution of Lanzhou vocational and technical college in the inheritance and popularization of Beijing opera, but also the innovation and exploration of Ideological and political education for college students. Lu Hao, Secretary of the provincial Party committee, wrote the inscription "quintessence of Chinese culture, cultivating people, and building the yuan through culture".

The college adheres to the road of internationalization. It has carried out extensive exchanges and cooperation with educational institutions in the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, Germany, Russia, Thailand and Taiwan. In cooperation with Japan's China New Century Conference, the college has built the "China Japan West Youth Exchange Center in the new century".
