Hunan City University is the first public full-time provincial undergraduate university approved by the Ministry of education. The history of the school can be traced back to Yiyang normal college founded in the spring of 1970 and Yiyang basic university founded in October 1978. After more than 40 years of construction and development, in March 2002, with the approval of the Ministry of education, Yiyang normal college and Hunan Urban Construction College were merged and upgraded to Hunan City College.
