Hunan University of science and technology is a public full-time undergraduate college approved by the Ministry of education and supervised by the Department of education of Hunan Province. The college was founded in 1941, formerly known as the seventh division of Hunan Province. In 2002, it was upgraded from the original Lingling teachers college to an undergraduate college, named Lingling college. In 2004, it was renamed Hunan University of science and technology. After more than 70 years of construction and development, it has become a multi-disciplinary local undergraduate college.

The college is located in Yongzhou, one of the top 20 happy cities in China and a famous historical and cultural city in Hunan Province. Yongzhou is also known as Lingling. According to the book of the five emperors in historical records, Shun went on a hunting expedition in the south, collapsed in the field of Cangwu, and was buried in Jiuyi in the south of the Yangtze River. The name of Lingling is well-known throughout the world, and has become one of the important ancient place names that appeared before Xia Dynasty and is still used today. In Yongzhou, the two rivers of Xiaoxiang run from north to south, the Wuling mountains run from east to west, the Hunan Guangxi high-speed railway, the Luoyang Zhanjiang railway, the QUANNAN expressway, the ER Guang Expressway and the Xiamen Chengdu Expressway crisscross, and Lingling airport has opened many routes such as Changsha, Kunming and Shenzhen, with beautiful scenery, outstanding people and convenient transportation. This is the birthplace of Emperor Shun's moral culture, Neo Confucianism culture, Yao culture, and Nvshu culture. It has bred Liu Zongyuan, Huai Su, Zhou Dunyi, he Shaoji, Li Da and other cultural celebrities. Because of its profound cultural heritage, it is known as "an endless book".

The college has 16 teaching departments, 38 general undergraduate majors, and enrollment for 27 provinces (cities, districts). At present, there are 13954 undergraduate students and 4431 adult education students. At present, there are 1080 teaching staff, including 742 full-time teachers, including 78 full-time teachers with senior titles, 192 vice senior titles, 53 doctors and 595 masters. At present, there are 5 provincial discipline leaders and 7 candidates for the second and third level of "new century 121 talent project". The college covers an area of 763000 square meters, with a building area of 450000 square meters. The college has 3 key construction disciplines, 1 provincial key laboratory, 5 provincial research bases, 3 provincial excellent teaching teams and 14 university level scientific research institutions. In the past five years, the teachers of the University have won more than 300 scientific research projects at or above the provincial level, including 5 national self science fund projects, 11 national social science fund projects, more than 20 scientific research awards at or above the provincial level, and 1 first prize of national teaching achievement award. The teachers published more than 4000 academic papers, among which more than 300 were included in the three major searches, and more than 150 books and textbooks were published. Journal of Hunan University of science and technology has been rated as "core journal of Chinese Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences", "national top 100 Journal of Social Sciences", and Liu Zongyuan's research column has been rated as "characteristic column of National Journal of Social Sciences". The college has carried out extensive international exchanges and cooperation. It has cooperated with nearly 10 foreign universities, such as Asian University of South Korea, Florida State University of the United States and Nagasaki Foreign Studies University of Japan. Every year, more than 10 foreign experts come to teach or give lectures.
